Overall, I have found that I was able to get to grips with it quite quickly and get on with some recording. The manual is comprehensive and clear, with step by step procedures. It also has a Quick Start section which gets you going and doing some recording in one session. In fact, I would say that getting good results is more a matter of experimentation than reading the manual, as after a few weeks of using the BR600 in earnest I am now achieving much higher quality recordings and mixes than at first. I would go so far as to say that I am now achieving results that I would find difficult to distinguish from studio quality recordings of the past (albeit that they are simple songs that are recorded on 5 tracks or so). And that's without using any additional equipment, except a good guitar. Everything you need apart from the musical instruments is included - it's a fantastic package and everything works well enough to achieve high quality results. Obviously it won't compete with best of breed specialist kit in all the areas it covers and you will come up against limitations sooner or later - I have. But quite honestly, for less than ?200 (I notice it's now gone up to ?250 but I only paid ?180) it easily gives you enough quality in all areas to amaze your friends and make brilliant demos. If you need to record a hit record, you probably need a studio and an engineer but you could write the songs on the BR600 first. Do yourself a favour and purchase a 1gb SanDisk flash card for ?9.99 (Boss have been a bit tight with their standard flashcard). I ran out of space on my 2nd recording and it caused the song to become corrupted.One the Amazon site the type II 2 gig compact Falsh cards are advertised alongside the BR600 logo - but this machine doesn't take them. It may say that 'Customers also bought' the 2 gig, but they don't work. The demand is for faster cards and more gig - which the BR600 cannot use. Getting hold of 1 gig cards is increasingly hard. There are other drawbacks but these are the ones I'm facing. It's a nifty cute machine, easy to learn and I love it but increasingly obsolete. This little box does everything a dedicated room full of gear would have done a decade ago. Not only that but using virtual tracks you can build, by careful bouncing, 8 tracks with ease, and if you go the whole hog, this machine is capable of 64 tracks of overdubbed material, although some of those will be stereo paired rather than independent mono tracks. Nevertheless this is an incredibly powerful tool if used with a thorough understanding of how it works. There are many forums on the 'net where you can get all sorts of tips which you feel are not adequately explained by the very large manual (DO read it.it will reward you in the end!). The only gripe is the limit of 1 gig compact flash for memory and the somewhat flakey and cumbersome export utility (you can export songs or pieces to your laptop or desktop computer). But for quality and ease of use, despite the digital access features by menu rather than physical knobs (what do you expect at this size and price?) this little gem is awesome, and in fact the menus are logically laid out and only take a few hours to become familiar with them. Not only are the internal effects top notch, but the internal stereo condensor mics are fantastic quality and give very good live recordings. This is absolutely ideal for recording anything from a string quartet to a live band. Just be careful to set the levels to just below peak to get maximum signal to noise ratio. For arranging and composing rock, pop or jazz this machine is all you need to make recordings almost indistinguishable from studio recordings costing a hundred times the price. The majority of guitar sounds in my opinion are over the top, ok if you like american 80,s rock. But the uk guitar patch works well for me. Here's why: - very light and portable so it'll fit in your gig bag - runs off batteries or AC power adaptor - a nice bunch of FX and amp sims - built-in stereo mics to capture acoustic guitar and vocals so you can just plug and play. In addition, you can use it as a drum machine to jam along to - it has some nice, velocity-sensitive pads and some reasonable drum kits. But get this: you can also use it as a sampler, as you can record a phrase, chop it up, and assign samples to your own drum kits and pads. Or you can copy some external samples onto the compact flash card and import them directly. The only downsides are the small screen (understandable, and you soon get used to it), the low capacity (max 1 GB CF cards supported), and the lack of XLR inputs and phantom power. You will be very lucky to find a good supply of the Type-1 CFlash cards this unit requires - most high street stores and online retailers only stock the newer Type II cards which are NOT compatible with the BR600. I tried and failed to get this thrown in with the unit. Obviously it is far too lucrative for retailers to sell the supply seperately. I now use the power supply from another Boss product and it works absolutely fine. I have also come across many people who found a normal adjustable voltage power supply works just fine. On a personal note, I find the drum pad (and indeed the drum sounds) to be unusable. The included rhythm patterns can be fun to jam to, or to use as an alternative to a metronome, but I would never attempt to record an actual live track from the pads. On a positive note, it is very quick to set up for recording a track. It is certainly a plus to be able to load it up with some batteries and record acoustic instruments free from the restrictions of cables, and the inbuilt stereo microphone gives great sounding results. Ultimately, this functions well as a 'sketchbook' for musical ideas, and I am sure that with great patience you can achieve professional results but the user interface is simply too restrictive to use effectively. So you can bounce 8 tracks plus drums onto one stereo pair - it's lossless, and there are v-tracks, so you can keep bouncing submixes all day with perfect quality. Initially the drum machine is confusing because tempo changes to patterns get lost on power-down. The answer is to always use 'user arrangements' which store the tempo. The drum machine has hidden talents as a sampler. It's not an MPC but you can sample up to 13 seconds from any audio track or a.wav file and map to the pads then put into sequences. Combine this with the ease with which you can copy and paste audio tracks multiple times, and the comprehensive effects, and you can make quite complex tracks with looped audio and samples. You can't put different insert effects on each sample in real time, but you can record different patterns or live pads with different effects to different tracks then mix them together - so you can have a tight compressed drum pattern on one track with reverby delayed samples over the top. You can adjust effects (eg delay feedback or pitchshift) as you bounce. You just have to do some bouncing to unlock the power. The only thing I really miss is midi out. Frustration from losing sync with an external midi sequencer forced me to buy a BR900CD, which has midi out but misses out the velocity-sensitive pads and is less portable.
