Can anyone help me?A simple brute force power supply is just a transformer giving about 16 volts, a bridge rectifier followed by a large electrolytic capacitor. This would give about 21 volts after the rectifier. The capacitor should preferably be a 40 volt type and maybe 3000 uF or more. A ready made solution would be a laptop power supply which you may be able to find cheaply. These give 18 to 20 volts DC and often get thrown away when the batteries in the laptop fail. There are a lot of these on Ebay at present. If it needs to be regulated, that has been covered quite well, and if it doesn't, he can be a bit more brutal with a simple power supply. And the replacement, if they can even get it is gonna be at least 50 bucks. I doubt the mixer is worth much more than that so I think I'll try something else. Yeah, I had the polarity correct, I'm certain of that. And when I turned it on, it worked for a few seconds, then fizzled out. I could turn it off for a few seconds and it would do the same thing, again and again. I think there just wasn't enough power at 16V to keep it going with a requirement of 21.5V. Should be some available via e-Bay. It would have a regulator built into it. Ideally, you could use a variable voltage power supply to get a proper idea of the voltage range it would work over. It does seem odd, though, that it didn't work at all on 16 volts. You might expect it to give distorted output but not stop altogether if the voltage was just a bit too low. Maybe it has some internal fault. It looks like it was an expensive unit when new. It has an on-off switch. If it was plugged in to the 16v while switched off, I could then turn it on, and it would work fine for a second or 2, then start to distort for a second or two and then would seem to turn off or be dead. I could turn it off with its switch, and then turn it on again, and the same thing would repeat. I tried it again today, using a different laptop power supply with slightly higher specs and I didn't seem to be able to get it to do much of anything, so I hope I didn't fry something along the way. I probably did, but I don't know what would do that, if anything. I notice the original power socket is 3 prong, and all the laptop power supplies I tried are 2 prong. I don't know if this matters. Was it working when you got it. It sounds like it is faulty now. There is probably an internal regulator in the mixer. One possibility is that this has failed and is letting the 16 volts input voltage through to the lower voltage circuitry. The way it works for a while may mean that it needs an new regulator and it will then work. Look for what looks like a transistor but is really a regulator. If this is there, try measuring the output voltage of it when you apply power from the 16 volt laptop adaptor. If it is still 16 volts or so, switch off and repair the regulator circuit. You may need to ask for help from someone familiar with this sort of repair. I think it was working, though it had been set aside for a long time. Bonus points if you can guess why I am taking a picture of it with the power supply plug removed- it's because I am in the same boat as the original poster. I immediately recognized that the supply was something different and have not tried to hook it up to anything. I hope the original poster didn't cook anything inside- I don't know how they tried to hook it up. A power supply could be built with a center trap transformer or you could use a circuit like this: I found this after a few seconds of searching. Change your supply voltage and regulator chip voltage (if there is such a thing as a 21 volt regulator) and you might have a supply that will run it. I have not tried this, although I do operate a TV satellite truck and work in the maintenance shop when not out in the field so I do have the skills to build such a device. Compared to the cost of the original one, you would have to get the supply transformer for next to zero to make this cost effective and even then there might be hum issues unless the supply was very well regulated. I will be saving up a few pennies to buy the overpriced factory supply in a month or so. If the original poster successfully builds a supply, I'd like to know however. Val I just figured it was toasted. I looked at the board and saw something that looked like some damage on the printed copper itself, soldered a couple bridges in there. Hooked it up to a laptop power supply I found and BINGO! Nothing. I figured the thing was junk and set it aside. Seems like a lot of trouble to get this thing going and the only factory supply I found is stupidly expensive and non-refundable, so not worth the risk. Please lead me to knowledge.Anyway, assuming those jacks in the pictures are mic inputs then you can use up to all 8 channels to mic your drum kit, using the pan pots on each individual channel to assign a position for each mic on the kit in the mix. Pan the channel 1 mic far left, the channel 2 mic to the center, and the channel 3 mic to the far right and record your drum track. Run the outputs from the Boss to Channels 1 and 2 on the Tascam. Once tyou've recorded those tracks, unplug all the mics from the mixer and plug in output cables from the Tascam. Channel 1 goes to input 1 and so forth. Adjust the relative volume for each track in the mix as you prefer. You'll need to output the four tracks of the Tascam to another two-track deck of some sort - it can be a cassette, another reel to reel, or to a computer if you have the interface. Still no stereo drum mix but you get more instruments in the ensemble. Don't do this bounce more than once without some dbx, however, as tape hiss will start building up quickly. In either case, though, you still need a second deck of some sort for the final mix into stereo.It all seems so obvious now of course. Three mic drum tip is solid. Seems within reach. So. I have a nakamichi cr-2a stereo deck. That should work for the final mix. It's been in a closet for a while. Any thoughts on that. Just need that its worth a purchase. Now I'm listening and mixing in post with the boss and recording into the two channel. ?'s Should I record into the boss and then into the Tascam. Can I utilize the Dbx button on a Tascam portastudio when recording into this reel to reel. Is this reel life?Last nights I recorded my landlord singing the Rolling Stones with his acoustic. Is this reel life? Tape deck mic inputs are traditionally okay but nothing great so everyone generally uses a board with good internal preamps or boutique outboard preamps. In the case of the Boss that you have, I'm not sure there's much improvement over the Teac's mic inputs. I'd test it both ways: plug in a mic directly into the Teac channel 1 mic input and set the levels and record. Then plug your mic into the Boss and use the line level connections to send another version of what you recorded on track 1 to track 2 on the Teac. Listen and compare; use the one that sounds best. BTW - if you're plugging your mics into the line inputs on the back of the Teac, you're not getting nearly enough volume from them. Which leads to questions 2 and 3: 3) The ganged input volume controls on the Teac control input levels to the line inputs on the back of the deck or the mic inputs on the front of the deck. I think the smaller knob controls mic level, the larger knob controls line input volume. For cleanest sound, turn off the volume on the line input if you're recording with a mic and vice versa. 2) I doubt you will need the att 30 switched in on the Boss. But you may find it necessary if the mic you use is too hot for the input. Most dynamic mics I'm familiar with don't have that much signal level. To answer the other half of the question, the dbx box will help with live recording on these machines. You'll get a quieter signal that you can bump over to other tracks more times than without it. 5) Sam can correct me on this, but I think the dbx circuitry on the Tascam portastudios is specific to the cassette deck in the portastudio. I've never really fiddled with one, but I would think that's the case as there are no access points for dbx on the back of a 246 I'm currently in possession of. Hope this helps. You first set the fader there, then use the gain knob at the top of the channel to properly adjust the final volume coming from the fader. Too little, and you won't see much signal going to the Teac (if you're tracking). Too much and that Overload light at the top of the channel will light up like a Christmas tree and the sound will be distorted. You may find that the gain knobs won't all be set at the same point, but if you properly record your signals onto each of the Tascam's 4 channels, the gain knobs and the faders should all be set equally to get equal volume from each of the Tascam's channels. Once you have established your reference point for each channel, you'll adjust the volume in the mix using the fader only.I was thinking you had a Teac 3440.
