It seems to do some tone shaping somewhat like the Resonance knob but not as dramatic. Rolling it to the left makes it more useful for the bass. Isn't that the rate knob's job? GlennThe rate knob changes how fast the delay time is varying. The manual knob changes the range of the variable delay time. How's that? Need more of a description?Try this: Rate at it's slowest Res at it's max Depth at it's max Then, with manual fully counter-clockwise, pick a note and pluck it over and over again, slowly. Listen to the sweep all the way up, all the way down, and all the way up again. Now, put the manual control fully clockwise and repeat the listening test. It's subtle, but it's definitely there. I can even hear it just from the self generated noise the thing makes with no input signal. Oh yeah, and to REALLY prove it, pop open the thing and tweak the internal RES pot up a bit, with the right twiddling you should be able to get it to self oscillate, and you'll find the manual control has a significant effect on the tone it produces. An example of BF-2 self oscillation with tweaking of the manual control affecting the pitch.Actually, I've gotta pull my finger and post the samples of the Ibanez DML-10 self osc. The Pan is cool in mono, kinda tremolo like with flanger.https://firstnationsjobsonline.com/userfiles/bose-l1-model-1-system-manual.xml The momentery is cool but would be better if the sweep kept moving instead of going back to the low point. A question to BF-2 owners, does the sweep start at at the low point of the sweep every time you switch it on.The BF-3 is digital, so it can start it's LFO cycle wherever it wants, in this case the engineers designed to always start at the bottom of the sweep. Beyond that I find the depth setting very un-musical. I really prefer manufacturers make min and max settings useful, but the BF-3 lets you get into non-useful territory. The momentery is cool but would be better if the sweep kept moving instead of going back to the low point. A question to BF-2 owners, does the sweep start at at the low point of the sweep every time you switch it on.Because its a digital delay line, unlike an Analogue BBD it can modulate the delay time down to ZERO milliseconds, i.e. No Delay. Whether it actually goes down to Zero depends on how you set the Manual and Depth controls. And even when it does reach zero, this is only brief. Fully Counter Clockwise, you are setting the maximum delay offset. Fully Clockwise you are setting the minimum, shortest delay offset. So, for any given Depth setting, the sweep is more likely to reach Zero with HIGHER Manual Settings.http://www.bosport.be/newsletter/3vze-shop-manual Conversely, Lower Manual Settings combined with lower Depth settings, the sweep stays well away from Zero. But there are upper and lower limits. The physical max delay time and min delay time of the Digital Delay Line. So regardless of Depth and Manual settings the the delay time can never be modulated above the Max Delay or Below the Min Delay (Zero). However, the Depth Setting on the BF3 seems to be Absolute. For arguments sake, lets say the Max Delay is 30ms and the Min Delay is Zero. Consider the changing delay time as it modulates up and down. Starting at 23ms, it decreases down to Zero, briefly increases up to 3ms, turns around and quickly decreases back down to Zero, then sweeps back up to 23ms, and the whole thing repeats ad infinatum. And depending on how you set Manual and Depth, can be brief or quite prolonged. This happens as a result of the wet and dry signals being so close together, the phase cancellation takes out lower frequencies and reinforces higher frequencies. With higher Resonance and some Gain in the signal, it can sound like a whistle. So, putting that into practical perspective on the BF3, if you have Manual AND Depth set above noon you will encounter the TZF whoop. In actual fact, if the Depth is set HIGHER than the Centre-Point, you will get TZF.If you set Depth higher than 9 Oclock (normal clockface), you get TZF. If you set Depth AT 9 O'clock, the sweep will go down to Zero, but doesn't rebound, it just comes all the way back up again. The same happens when the sweep hits the max delay, except it is less noticeable, because there is a lot less phase cancellation taking place. Got that? Wait, there's more. And we're still in Standard mode. The wide scope of the delay line allows long delay sweeps on par with those only achievable with the RETICON SAD1024 of yore, which could get down to tenths of milliseconds minimum delay. So Fans of the Original EHX Electric Mistress, the ADA and MXR Flangers need to check out the BF3.http://completedetailspainting.com/images/boss-bf-2-owners-manual.pdf There's still more. Is the BF3 making your head hurt, and you would rather just have a simple BF2? Stop there. Unplug your guitar from the Guitar Input and Plug it into the BASS Input. Voila, BF2!! I probably wouldn't recommend running it over with your car, but I also wouldn't bet against it functioning if you'd unfortunately done so. One of the most attractive features that always draws me back to boss is their size. Being a sound junkie I am always experimenting with various arrangements of pedals on my board, and by using boss pedals that are built extremely concise they permit musicians such as my self the ability to fit far more pedals on one board then if i were to use pedals of different makes. In closing Boss Pedals are great sounding, easy to use, superior construction, easy to modify and relatively inexpensive. I do own many other brands of pedals but when I am in the market for something new to produce some new desired tone required by a particular song or arrangement I always check Boss's lineup first for all the reasons listed previously to see if they have something to accommodate.I'm sure the newer version is no different outside of separate guitar and bass inputs. Maybe 1 and 11 respectively or right in between. That will get you close enough to tweak from there.Once you shut it off it still adds some high frequencies on your signal path. The best use for me would be with a looper true bypass where I can choose how I want my signal at the time.anxuetang.com/upload/files/case-448-tractor-manual.pdf Straight clean, distorted, wha, or flanger. 4 stars only for not being true bypass. But yIt's got all the tone adjustments you need while making it easy to use. And as always, all of Boss's pedals are built like tanks. Mine has taken quite a beating yet still works and sounds like new. ON HOLD --- Boss BF-2 Flanger - ?45Some say they prefer this to the newer BF-3. There are lots of videos online to see how it fares.I am not using it like I would like, so it goes sadly.Inputs for Guitar or Bass, and connection for an external control for manual control. Used, but in very good condition, bar some glue left on the underside by the previous owner's overzealous velcro use. Picture of this for clarity. There's no box, or instructions I'm afraid. Happy to post for ?5 anywhere in UK mainland, I'll make sure it's very well packed.UK Royal Mail 1st class signed delivery included in the price. Possibly open to trades for other pedals - try me.All pedals in good working order, a few have superficial marks and chips so I'll go into detail where I can but they're all in good condition generally. I'll include boxes and leaflets where available too but if I haven't photographed a box I didn't receive one when I bought the pedal.Further pictures and details available on request. Chip on the top right and bottom right corners. Footswitch pops a little but as an 'always on' effect it never bothered me. Various chips all over but, while beautiful, the paint on these is rather brittle. Really great sounding and faithful reproduction of the Maestro B:ASSMASTER. Can often be a few weeks lead time on these, mine is available now ??Some superficial scratches but nothing major. Pretty much 'as new.'Didn't really get much use our of it but a cool effect nonetheless. Have a few preferred chorus pedals so moving this on. Footswitch is a little poppy and there's some low level background noise but I've experienced the same thing on a couple if these pedals. Pretty sure I have the box somewhere for this one. Probably only been charged about 20-30 times, so plenty of life left in it.LS-2 rubber base removed cleanly and will be included.Asking ?100 for the three.
