He thinks they are the cats meow. So I searched craigslist and I found a pair of 901s for 200 dollars. Then the guy throws in a beautiful working Kenwood KA 7300 amp. I like my Bose 301's better then these 901 VI. Perhaps it's the amp I have the associated speakers to what. I took advantage of the Bose Trade-in program some years ago when they still offered it. There are several companies that offer the drivers, and replacing them for both pair is around 560.00-Plus the time involved.I need to do a repair on the equalizer. I cannot find the Series III Service Manual. Thanks To be use for PA system or Karaoke. Any suggestion for an appropriate mixer. I'm looking for resources to help me troubleshoot and repair the equalizer. I don't have much experience, but I would like to learn, and this seems like a fun project. If anyone is willing to help break things down as simple as is convenient, or could help guide me in this process, I would be very grateful. We all have to start somewhere. I refurbished the speakers myself, and would like to say I did the same to the equalizer. Due to purchasing from a second hand store and not really knowing enough about them I consequently now own two right hand speakers. For a couple hundred, I'd say go to audiogon.com and look for something from a value-orientated brand with a good reputation for sound. You'll find people around here who have their favored manufacturers, and I'm no different. Paradigm speakers are bargains and I recommend trying them out. My dealer says - and I'm inclined to agree - that most Paradigms compare musically and sonically to big-name speakers costing twice as much. It should be noted that my dealer does not sell only Paradigm, but also Linn, Sonus Faber, and Vienna Acoustics, so he's heard the expensive stuff. Another thing to do is go to the main page and check out recommended loudspeakers, which will give you an idea of which companies are making the best products. My 901 had the surrounds completely disinigrate. I bought a surround repair kit. It was a bit difficult to do. The adhesive was really stringy and seemed to geton everything. Also it was very important to get the cone centered or the voice coil would drag and make bad noises. A speaker is a complete system and trying to substitute another driver will usually upset the balance of that system. Resell the 901's if you can or just take the loss as a lesson learned, and start listening to some of the fine budget speakers that are around now. I would recommend visiting a Bose forum for more help, I believe at least one exists out there in the e-ther. You'll be hearing more from me in the near future. Don't buy any repair kit. Contact Bose and send them to repair.Bose sent me the service manual gratis, there where some well hidden clips and stuff, made it simple to take apart, without service manuals, things re difficult, there is always one secret clip or screw that will get ya. I was impressed that Bose provided the info and parts on an obsolete product, as they do not really support the old cassette types further than the belts.The thing is 20 years old and going strong. They do stand behind their stuff, that's one good Bose thing. My father had a Bose wave radio, tuner died, simple ckt board assy, they fixed it no charge even when it was well out of warranty, ya pay up front as they are pricey, but at least they back it up, and the parts are not that special or pricey, but free labor and shipping too! Parts fixed it, I praise them for having the schematic it allowed me to take it apart, nice exploded diagram, FREE!! Actually less than it was made out to be. But I live in a relatively humid area, the glue drying quicker in a dry region might make it more difficult. Also gluing the outer, then the inner edge was unnecessary, you can do both together - quickly. Re getting the cone centered is not that dramatic, it is easy to find the sweet spot and then release your pressure and tap the already glued inner edge of the surround to seal that (I suspect they also self-centre themselves too). Not having a crossover DOES help, lovely voices (playing Frank Sinatra at the moment) via a domestic 45W RMS Yamaha AVR. A speaker either has it, or does not. Most don't. IMHO my now 3 transducers DO. The equalizer that came with it also reduced the hz after 15k dramatically. There is a new trend of replacing the equalizer with a digital signal processor with better and smoother graph. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. The very first thing I noticed was that the tag next to the power cord says it's rated 210- 250 v, yet has a standard power cord. I opened it up to get a list of caps to replace and not sure how to proceed from here. Any insight or suggestions?Which version EQ is it. If I remember right, there is a resistor for dropping the voltage from 220 to 110. I definitely remember that there is a method for conversion. Do you have the service manual. I have one for my series III. I also changed my neon lamp to a red LED, it won't fail again in my lifetime GlennThere is a wire wound power resistor that needs to be removed to run it on 115v. It's as easy as that. Glenn EDIT: One other tip, wrap the transformer in copper shielding tape as this will reduce the noise these units are known for.I have a series IV and no service manual. I've been scouring the net for one, but haven't found any other than series I or II. I don't see a wirewound anywhere and bought this from a fellow AKer who said that is functional so maybe I won't have any problems. Just being cautious. I'd definitely replace the 8x10 uF and 2x470 uF electrolytic caps at a minimum, though.Does anyone have any suggestions on a specific brand of caps I should use and should I also replace the op amps while I'm in there. One more question for now, does anyone know how the clip that holds the power light works. This one is just hanging in mid air with nowhere to attach it that I can see.I would recommend replacing the op-amps. The original RC4558s seem to go a bit noisy over time. The pin-out is the standard DIP-8 op-amp and nearly any will work fine. Bose specified either RC4558 or TL072 interchangeably in the Series IV. I've also used a TLE2072 and MC33078P, which offer respectively better noise and distortion specs. You can also pick up a TI OPA2604 in a DIP8 package, if you're looking for something a bit more exotic. I have a handful of those lying around I mean to try in the Series IV, I just haven't gotten around to it quite yet. And of course plenty of other audio op-amps out there. There's a red jewel that sticks through the hole from the front of the chassis, and the clip inside pushes over a lip on the jewel. Lee.Is there any benefit either way?Bose released a service bulletin saying they're bad and to replace them with TL072 or RC4558s. You can replace all 4 with the same kind and it'll be fine.Early production runs of the 801 and 901 Series IV equalizers used National LF 353 op-amps. It has been shown that some of these components have lead contamination problems and are prone to failure. Typically, they exhibit high noise, although many will fail completely. National has since modified their processes so that this failure mode is no longer prevalent. Additionally, we have changed vendors to Motorola TLO 72 or Raytheon 4558 and 4559. It is suggested that for all equalizer failures that are using the LF 353 IC, that all four IC's be changed for the Motorola or Raytheon IC's mentioned. Click to expand. If it's a 240v transformer, it should be half what it's supposed to be. Either buy a new transformer, or post the voltages here.
