Follow these steps, in the order below, to install your 901 Series VI speaker system. 1. Choose the best locations and support for the 901 speakers (page 6). Pedestal (A) and ceiling mount. See the inside back cover for phone numbers.It is important to use the right thickness of speaker wire. For distances of up to 30 feet (9 m), 18 gauge (.075 mm ) 2-conductor wire works well. For distances greater than 30 feet (9 m), refer to the wire recommendations chart on page 18. Your choice depends on the type of receiver you own and whether you plan to use the system primarily for stereo or for home theater enjoyment.Refer to the address information inside the back cover of this guide.Connect right channel to right channel and left channel to left channel. To use an external signal processor, or to add a graphic equalizer, contact Bose for more information. Refer to the inside back cover of this guide. How you set the equal- izer depends on how it is connected to your receiver. Press your receiver TAPE MONITOR button to the IN or MONITOR position. This switches the equalizer into the system. Use the tone controls on your receiver only after the MID-TREBLE and MID-BASS sliders have been set according to the procedures below. These controls let you make adjustments to compensate for the effects of speaker location, room acoustics, and program quality. Then check all the connections between the speakers, receiver, and active equalizer. They are designed long time ago, before CD and DVD players. And as we know, their output signal is about 2V. EQ s-IV and earlier are designed for tape deck, tuner and turntable signals, which is about 0.5V. The higher signal levels overload the EQ and begin distortions. That's why, if you use players without regulated outputs, or if your receiver or preamp inputs are not attenuated, you'll have problems with the quality of the sound.But you know this very well Lately I use mine with The Bose Spatial Receiver. And even with this old vintage, with dry old capacitors and mash of switches and wires inside, I think, they sound well. And my advice is - don't try to use them without the right EQ. It's waste of time.Btw I think the 901's mid-century modern styling still looks cool, especially the black version and especially when the Bose pedestals are used with them (they were used this way in a cellphone commercial about four years ago, located in a swanky, light-colored modern apartment).OTOH, currently an old vintage speaker as the early series of 901 is much harder to beat than in those days, because the tendency of the sonic quality from today's commercial speakers have become significantly worse, even in the upper price class. More tedious than difficult to do it yourself, but to ship these to a speaker repair shop would be ridiculously expensive. I will admit that doing the first few speakers (9 in each cabinet!) was a little disconcerting, but each one I did was quicker than the one before it. A little oil base stain on the cabinets, new speaker cone foam edges, and cleaned out cabinet, and the speakers sound like they are brand new again.
