To the OP-It appears that Bose did not use butyl surrounds in that era, and so it is likely they will rot, as far as when, that's a hard one to call. I have had identical speakers from the same years with both rotten and great surrounds. Perhaps climate control has something to do with it. Sell them now while they work if you don't want to mess with them later. Its not too surprising that you preferred the 701's over Sansui's. Many feel that way about most of Sansui's Kabuki-style offerings. Its far easier to integrate drivers together when using fewer to get the work done. The 701's are more like a two-way(well, 2.5 way) with the lowest bass covered by the bottom woofers.
