Watch the parkin' meters I was intrigued at first because I knew for a fact that this was the first generation of Bose’s 800-series speakers. The Bose 802s succeeded these older series, which were the Bose 800. These speakers were equipped with a wooden cabinet and the griss had these big BOSE letters on them, as can be seen in the picture. These Bose 800 speakers also came with their own active equalizer too, pictured below: I do know the Bose 802s could handle roughly 280 watts RMS of power. I am not too sure about these 1970s-era speakers. But I do know that for general speech and small-sized PA, these would have done nicely back then. I have a XR 560 Powered mixer (mono) by Peavy and am not sure where to plug in the equalizer. The manual for Bose says to treat it as if I was plugging in an echo unit or reverb unit. The head already has reverb.http://www.kaplug.co.kr/Upload/bosch-maxx-7-sensitive-manual-english.xml

These units are to be used with power amplifiers, where the equalizer comes before the power amps If your mixer is powered it is best to use an insert on the master section or else an effects send to the EQ and then run the out on the EQ to the return on the effect. Use a master effects send and return though. That’s what my band used to do and it worked great. Notify me of new posts via email. To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here. I need the missing four?th to test out the old two in the ceiling and two on stands trick. The pro EQ (for the 800) had a slightly different EQ curve.IIRC, they use 4 ohm drivers. To keep it clean I just hooked up the eq on the cd player(Sony cdp-x303es) variable output and directly to the amp. The speakerstands are about 72cm or 28.3 inches with spikes on, just something I had lying around, will get some proper ones later. So how do they sound???The drivers do look very similar to my series II drivers, but have a slightly different number. The series II driver I pulled out of a trashed cabinet, have these numbers. 103342 28079 2857443 4 They must sound very similar to a 901.Trying to get a womans vocal out of a single 6.5 inch midrange speaker aint possible if you want that realistic feeling. lolI thought the Bose 901 series were supposed to have the 8 drivers on the angled face facing the front wall away from the listener and has only one driver on the flat face facing the listener. This provides the room with a very spacious, somewhat Omni-type sound. This is also how I remember them setup at the Pacific Stereo and Federated Stereo stores I visited in the 70's and 80's. See these writeups: Bose 901 Series II owners manual from Bose website: See the section on placement.http://www.restauraceeverest.cz/userfiles/bosch-maxx-7-user-manual.xml However, here's the current Bose Pro 802 Panaray which shows the speaker only has the 8 drivers on the curved surface and they are meant to face towards the listener. This would suggest that the 800 series functions much more as a typical direct radiator type speaker system with a broader dispersion pattern because of the angled or curved baffle. Regards, Bart Click to expand. Would changing the original resistor for a high power Vishay or Arcol be a good idea. Think this is only 50 watts tolerance. If it was inside the speaker, then it would be installed to make up for the 9th driver that wasn't used in the 800 series speakers. Since these were built for sound projection, they were turned around and the other driver on the other face would have been removed. I'd leave it alone as you are not going to improve the sonics with a replacement. The Bose part number is 103342. The stampings on your replacements indicate they were made tested in late 1990. Frankly, I didn't think they had kept up production of those older drivers into the 90s. I'd suggest replacing the power supply caps in the EQ to improve sonics and imaging. I remember when the 800 series stuff came out in the late 70s before I got out of the audio biz and into the computer biz. There was also a version of the Bose 1801 power amp in a Full-Metal-Jacket, rack-mount version to compliment these speakers. The equalizer was also a little black box with no controls for the Series 800s. So, the EQ should work fine with those speakers, you have enough power to drive them properly, and the drivers themselves appear to be in pretty good shape. Enjoy! Cheers, DavidFrankly, I didn't think they had kept up production of those older drivers into the 90s. Click to expand. Trying to find a 1801 amp with pre and a 800 eq would be more difficult than locating the holy grail I think. Better off finding a Yamaha pc2002m to go along with the one I got and the fourth speaker.http://eco-region31.ru/bosch-shy56a02uc-manual The Jacks on the backplates needs to be replaced as they are worn out, any suggestions. Would need to be airsealed as the speakers are sealed chamber.Trying to find a 1801 amp with pre and a 800 eq would be more difficult than locating the holy grail I think. Would need to be airsealed as the speakers are sealed chamber. Click to expand. Both the 800 and 900 Bose series of speakers need the audio spectrum being fed to them to be distorted (more bass and more highs). If you really think about it, what is in these cabinets is a flock of midranges. Where you could run into a problem is, if these are going to be used with other speakers in the same system, the same distorted audio spectrum will also be fed to those speakers. You do need to seal replacement jackplates. Air leaks in places that aren't supposed to be there will result in dirty sound. Consumer Electronics Electronics Repair Questions.Yes, in order to have the speakers sound proper you do need to use the Bose EQ for them. Do you need assistance in hooking up the EQ. Also, do you know what series 800's you have (not a big deal if not). Ask Your Own Consumer Electronics Question Customer reply replied 9 years ago yes i need help to hook up the eq to the peavey xr600f powered mixer, thanks Electronics Technician: Aric, Technician replied 9 years ago Okay what you need to do is connect the Left and Right line outputs from your Mixer (or whatever device you have connected directly to the Peavey currently), into the Left and Right Inputs on the Bose EQ. You want ALL signal coming OUT of the Mixer to hit the Tape In on the Bose EQ, then Tape Out on the Bose EQ to the Amplifier.https://www.accessoriperdisabili.com/images/bose-601-series-ii-manual.pdf This is the only way that the final signal coming out of the Mixer, is Equalized properly and then sent to the power amplifier, then to the Bose speakers. Electronics Technician: Aric, Technician replied 9 years ago I need to know first, with what type of cables (connections) do you have the Mixer to the Peavey. Is the output from the Mixer currently RCA. What you would do then is use RCA cables from the Tape In on the mixer, to the Tape Out on the Bose EQ, then connect RCA cables from the Tape Out on the Mixer to the Tape In on the Bose EQ. Ask Your Own Consumer Electronics Question Customer reply replied 9 years ago THERE IS NO TAPE OUT OR TAPE IN ON THE BOSE EQ BOSE BACK PANEL IS INPUT FROM MIXER CHANNEL 1 CHANNEL 2 FOR MONO OPERATION USE 1 INPUT ONLY THEN OUTPUT TO AMPLIFER INPUT CHANNEL 1 AND 2 Electronics Technician: Aric, Technician replied 9 years ago Tape Out on Mixer to Inputs 1 and 2 on Bose EQ. Tape Inputs on Mixer to Outputs 1 and 2 on Bose EQ. What is important is the chain of connections going from In to out. Ask Your Own Consumer Electronics Question Customer reply replied 9 years ago ONE MORE QUESTION, HOW DO I KNOW IF IT IS WORKING THERE ARE NO ADJUSTMENTS OR DIALS OR SWITCH'S ON THE BOSE EQ. Electronics Technician: Aric, Technician replied 9 years ago You would hear a difference in the audio. Also, if connected to the Tape In and Out jacks, there would be no sound at all if the EQ was not working. It completes the loop in the Preamp section of the Mixer when connected to the Tape jacks. This is very similar to the Bose 901 Series II active equalizer; the 800 series were Bose’s PA speaker series from the same model years. They featured the same cabinet design with an iconic “BOSE” grille cover, and the same 8 aligned drivers as the rear side of the 901 series. It has stripped out components which would otherwise have been needed for the adjustments. The curve is slightly different from the 901 series on account of the slightly different driver configuration, but realistically they could be interchanged and you’d probably never notice the difference in practice. Both have a very wide and lively sound stage. It will serve for a long time producing the needed signal for a pair of Bose 800 or Bose 901 Series II speakers. Bookmark the permalink. Do you have the BOM for the board so I can just order what’s needed. You however have pictured the EQ sitting on top of the speakers. It’s up top just for show in the photo. Actually the suppressed front driver was replaced by a 10.Added to the nominal output impedance of 901 equalizers (less than 100 ?) it matched the old traditional PA transmission line impedance (600 ?). This resistor can be easily suppressed if this equalizer is hooked-up in a hi-fi set instead of a regular Series I or II equalizer. Best regards. I ask me, if there 8 pieces of 8-ohm single speakers inside, how the complete box can have 8 ohm at plug.Notify me of new posts via email. I haven't been able to find a whole lot of information on them as far as value or age. Was wondering if anyone was educated on these or knew any information on them. I might be interested in selling them, but wanted to get more information before I posted them on the sales thread. I appreciate any and all info I can get on these. Thanks again, No one with any knowledge about speakers will have any interest in Bose.Yes new BOSE stuff is complete crap compared to what we can find with a little research but that doesnt conclude that this product is crap, it could be great for the price offered. We dont really know and therefore this should not be a BOSE hatefest!! They sound quite nice as a PA or DJ system. We dont really know and therefore this should not be a BOSE hatefest!!I still remember hearing them when they were new and it wasn't so much that they were good then as it was there wasn't all that much else in those days. True, they really have gone down hill over the years especially with things like the Acoustamess but they were never really all that good even in the early days. Altec was the big thing back then especially for pro and it was worlds above Bose in every way. So, agreed.to some extent but Bose has no history of being a quality product the way Altec, Klipsch, Jensen, and a few other oldies do. Monte Are you seriously suggesting that you have heard Bose speakers that don't totally suck. If so, that puts you in a small minority. In the mid 70’s through the 90’s I traveled across the country playing music in small clubs to large concerts and I can tell you that Bose outperformed most of our equipment. Montekay mentioned Altec being a better speaker. We had 8 Altec Lansing Voice the Theater speaker cabinets that were replaced by 4 Bose 801 speakers. My son walks around with dr dre headphones hanging around his neck thinking he has something great but if you compare those to the Bose headphone you realize you can’t hear that drumstick hit the bell of the cymbal or the finger slide across the guitar string. The truth is, if Bose was so bad why has every company tried to copy the Bose Acoustimass surround sound system. I don’t have a dog in this fight, I just hate seeing someone mislead by people like penngray that are probably listening to his dr dres right now. I hope this helps. In the mid 70’s through the 90’s I traveled across the country playing music in small clubs to large concerts and I can tell you that Bose outperformed most of our equipment. I hope this helps.Take apart almost any of their speakers over the past and you'll find thin paper cones, tiny magnets, fishing string size tinfoil for inter-wiring, terminated with cheap plastic connections. Also, saying Bose headphones are better than Monster won't impress anyone. Even though it was revived by someone else, I apologize for adding to the stupidity. In the mid 70’s through the 90’s I traveled across the country playing music in small clubs to large concerts and I can tell you that Bose outperformed most of our equipment. I hope this helps.Bose has managed to convince a great portion of the public that they actually put out a quality product. So, other manufacturers put out look a likes so they can ride Bose's coattails and make a little money off of someone else's BS factory. He has done great work replacing the capacitors on my Series IV EQ in the past, and is now performing upgrades on this unit's RCA jacks as well as amp and audio sections. If you haven't heard the difference between an aged EQ and one that has been upgraded, I can tell you that there is a substantial difference in the upgraded system's ability to produce rich and detailed sound. In addition to my Series IV 901's with upgraded EQ, I also have a set of new Series VI.2 901's, and, surprisingly, I honestly cannot tell that there is a great deal of difference between the two. I cannot recommend him any more highly. So make the investment; it's way, way worth it! The speakers are 3.75 inches in diameter without a crossover. If you don't use the eq, then you ain't got no highs and you ain't got no lows so it must be Bose. It is totally the fault of low information listeners (some who's confidence level is truly amazing). Bose 901's aren't audiophile speakers and they never intended to be. They are fun, loud, small, dynamic and retro-cool. Buy a set or two of Series I or Series II speakers and get the eq updated. Awesome! The EQ upgrade made a huge difference in sound quality. My son in college loves them and they will rock the house! I was amazed at how good my bose sounded after Dave finished his work. Great job and would highly recommend to anyone to use Dave. He also called and went over everything with me, and that made the process even more special and put me at ease from start to finish. Great job Dave and Thank you With his repairs and upgrades to my equalizer my 901s are alive again. I had bought the speakers and equalizer a few months before, re-foamed all 18 drivers and thought some of them had blown speaker coils, there was a distortion but could not narrow down which drivers. I sent my equalizer to David. The unit was originally setup for 220volts since it was purchase in Germany in 1980. Whom ever tried to change it over to 110volts mess up, the equalizer board was only getting part of the power needed. After David's repairs these old speakers sound band new!!! Through a series of clear, timely emails Dave helped me decide on several upgrades. He then completed the work in a timely manner and when it turned out my speakers needed more work (NOT related his work) he continued his excellent service by advising me how to proceed.
