The system's two 8 inch woofers (one facing the front grille and another radiating through the acoustically transparent top grille) provide outstanding bass response while simultaneously providing a balance of reflected and direct sound. Four identical tweeters are used to simulate the distribution of sound energy normally associated with live performances, radiating through front and top, the tweeter crossfires the high-frequency energy via the reflecting walls of the listening room. This unique design provides multiple sound reflections creating a sense of spaciousness with a strong centre image. The 601's crossover network incorporates a unique control that modifies the spatial performance of that speaker. I'm looking to replace the woofers on some Bose 601 series 1 that I got cheap. No Bose bashing please, as I have read all there is to read about both sides.I refoamed three of the four woofers; one doesn't work. These woofers are 16 Ohms. It looks like I would have a hard time finding new ones or replacing them with old originals. I believe the newer series II are 4 Ohm each driver. Any ideas. I also have some Boston Acoustics A60 series I that are an exact replacement to the Bose, except for the impedance mismatch. I was thinking of swapping one of the BA woofers in each of the Bose, just to see how it sounds.Maybe one of those would fit.If there's an inductor in that box, I'll be impressed. If you wanted to get tricky, get a decent woofer and throw a single inductor in front of it, and perhaps notch out any top-end garbage. Good luck, in any case. They won't sell you the needed woofer but they will take the entire speaker back and replace the woofer for you. What about checking ebay for spare parts? These speakers sound astoundingly good, especially for orchestral music and opera. I grew up with Bozak Symphonies (Moorish) and I'm not unhappy with these Bose. Right now I have them paired with a Yamaha Natural Sound A-460 and the whole thing tends a bit bright. Any thoughts? Many thanks.Highs and mids are good but these speakers are very strong in the low frequencies. Nature of the beast, I guess. I tend to listen at relatively low level anyway, but the R-50 definitely required adjustment that my other gear does not.I don't remember them being bright at all, I had other speakers at the time that were bright. I was more impressed with the bass. The 601s seem to be really forgiving and should sound pretty good on most anything.I made some adjustments on my A-460 (35 wpc) and things are sounding better. On another note, I bought another Yamaha yesterday, a CR-450. It is rated at 30 wpc but for some reason is very boomy through the 601-1 speakers. Would you guys have any idea why that would be?You will have to register with them in order to download it. That will help you sort out the use of the Loudness control vs.I adjusted the loudness on my A-460 and invested in a DAC and things are really sounding good, at least to my ears and at this stage of my interest in this hobby. Thanks again for your responses, this is a great resource. They play plenty loud and sound great too. Click to expand. In addition to the manual for your receiver, one for the speakers is available online: They apparently require some care in setup. They were simply fun to play music thru, always a treat. You'd think a man with isoplanar McIntosh XRT20's wouldn't miss Bose ANYTHING, but.you'd be wrong. They were simply fun to play music thru, always a treat. As for power, I opted to at least investigate similar amps with more power to help with dynamics at low volume. In trying to find similar amps to my A-460 but more powerful, I have now gone on an official deep dive. I have now acquired a pair of serviced 601-2s to compare with my 601-1s. The series 2 are much better and actually quite astounding. I have also purchased a Yamaha A-760, A-700 and (because an audiophile in Michigan told me I'd be surprised at how good it sounds) a DSP A-3090. I am currently trying everything out and I'll post again once I've decided what to keep and what to sell. The results were surprising. The DSP A-3090 was unbelievable, almost too perfect. The A-700 was underwhelming somehow. We will keep the A-760 as main amp. Is that why these sound so good. No idea, but it sounds awesome. THe DSP A-3090 is in the basement sending TV sound to the 601-1s. I'll sell those speakers and try something else. It's kind of ironic here that everyone is talking about what equipment they are changing to extract the best they can get out these toads without realizing the speakers are the problem, not the equipment. If you put lipstick on a pig it is still a pig. Your just wasting money on the lipstick and the pig sounds even more irritating. Why? Because compared to the anemic systems that were offered before, the Bose DID sound better. Why? It was simply louder. They used a separate amp for each speaker rated at 2 OHMS to get twice the power and they cut off the frequencies above 11k and below 125 hz.so they didn't have to use a large amp and viola. Clean, clear sound. NO imaging, NO depth of stage, NO detail, NO clarity, NO tight focused base. NO highs, NO lows. That's just Bose. But to those people whose experience was limited to factory systems and not aftermarket options from Alpine, Kenwood, Nakamichi and Denon this was a much better system then before and it came as part of the car. It was better shit but still shit. Now that I have been completely negative I think it is only fair to offer some input on keeping the 601s you seem to want to go to the grave with. The early Yamaha receivers (80s) used high quality output transistors and had excellent power supplies. Another option would be to try some Kimber Kable speaker wire in EQUAL lengths for time alignment. We then owe Ray Kimber a bigger debt of gratitude for showing us how it is done. Used to have a set in my van. Then he cut up an auxilary headphone jack, wired it to the speaker and plugged it into the Sanyo. It played at about 60 DB cleanly before it went into distortion. Ilusweller also makes a point about dumping his Sony 900Es sounding tinny and bright and getting a Luxman amp. Around 1991 Panasonic,Sony, Technics,Sherwood,Teac and sadly,Yamaha started making video receivers in addition to audio receivers. That wasn't the worst of it. They were trying to make things cheaper by messing with the power supplies and using ICs instead of regular out put transistors. The result was receivers that were loud and seemed to have a lot of volume. The problem was there was no stereo seperation. The mids sounded veiled like a towel had been thrown over the speakers. And the high frequencies. They sounded grainy, tinny and absolutely ear fatiguing. If you own one of these 90's receivers the best thing you can do to improve the Bose is throw the receiver away. Years ago a customer brought one in ( a Sony )to where I worked and said he purchased it 4 months ago and wanted to trade in on a Luxman or McIntosh. We would only be changing the rcas on the CD player. We set all tone controls to defeat or neutral, loudness off We listened to the Sony first. Had to turn the volume to 11:00 before we heard any moderate volume. Hearing actual stereo separation and imaging. Buy the Nakamichi and you shall be blessed and absolved of your sins. Dump the Sony and sin no more. Sorry! I couldn't resist. i'm making fun here but seriously, all six of us that were there including the customer were astounded at the ease with which the Nakamichi seriously kicked the crap out of the Sony. The notes had that special bloom and decay to them which showed there was very good dampning in the amp. The highs were silky smooth but detailed without any hint of aggressiveness or harshness. There was a definite depth of stage where it seemed you could locate where the singer was upfront with the base guitarist to her left and the drummer 4' back. In short it was one of the most detailed, accurate, musical, systems I've ever heard You could actually hear Joe Cocker spitting into the microphone and Stevie Ray Vaughn sliding his fingers down the guitar frets. He really scored on that deal. For the price then and now the best bang for the buck and the most outstanding audio reproduction was the Nakamichi SR2A 30Wx2, SR3A, 45Wx2, no remote 1986 to1988. All TA Series have remotes. I would have gladly paid more. I sent it to my tech so he can replace all the capacitors since they leak in every receiver over time and adversely effect the sound quality, Oh. You thought you could just buy a 25 year old receiver, plug it in and it will sound the same as new. Wrongo in the Congo Jethro.Love it so much I picked up a spare Nak on Ebay a few years ago. The factory JBL subwoofer in my 2006 4Runner blew a few months ago and I really didn t want to go aftermarket because of just how great the stock system sounds with no bulky sub or amp taking up precious cargo room. I ordered the repair kit Friday, and here it is Monday and the sub is already repaired and back in the truck. I am extremely impressed by the quality of the replacement surround and the simplicity of the installation, not to mention the great price. Your instructions were top notch and having a YouTube video to watch just to double check the steps is just icing on the cake. I am a bug believer in repair instead of replace when at all possible, and I will most definitely be ordering from your company again in the future. Please, please keep up the awesome things you all are doing. In a disposable world, it s a relief to see a company that still believes in repair. Thank you so much! The foam edge kit I ordered arrived in only two days. Your online videos provided me with everything I needed for a first time foam edge repair. My Mach 3s sound great again. Great doing business with you. After watching their excellent video on how to repair my woofers, I was about to buy one of two repair kits, but after I sent a photo, they identified that neither kit would work for my repairs, and that the only option was replacement -- which saved me buying a repair kit or two, as well as a lot of time and frustration. Taking this time to answer my rookie questions, even though I was obviously not going to be a high-dollar customer, really impressed me. I buy things online now and then, mainly through Amazon, but I have never taken the time to write a review before, if that tells you anything. An easy way is to view their instructions ahead of time. Before ever ordering I watched the video on repairing my 128H speakers. It covered things I didn't know ( differences in diameter cones ), and fully showed the repair process. Not only that but Sean Ryan ( guy in the video ) actually looks like he's talking from experience unlike, the other videos I viewed. Honestly he looks like he could re-foam a speaker in the dark. Anyhow, warm fuzzy feelings that if I hit a snag I could call someone and they'd actually know what I was talking about. Plus other kits I looked at really do seem to come with the same white glue that we ate in kindergarten. The quality of the foam seems good too. Anyhow, after watching the video and reading their instructions I re-foamed two speakers on my kitchen counter in a Friday evening with no trouble at all and the speakers sound great once again. First time order from Simply Speakers and I have to say I like the glue that came with this order a good deal better than the two different glues received from the competition in the past. The other worked as well, but this was a good deal easier to work with in my opinion. Your quick response team is awesome in answering questions. Your super fast shipping can't be beat. You have outstanding customer service. I would highly recommend you to anyone looking for excellent speaker repair products. Many thanks for helping me get my stereo back up and running top notch. Have a wonderful day! I called to inquire about refoaming my vintage Heathkit AS1348 woofers last Friday. I was not hopeful of a favorable outcome considering their age and rarity. However, when I called I was pleased to learn that my speakers indeed could be repaired. I was shipped the New-Edge-It repair kit on Monday and as of Friday morning I am listening to them in all their former glory. Although I had never attempted such a repair or even knew it was possible, with the help of your online videos it was simple and straightforward. Many thanks for your prompt and courteous service. As I am now retired, I look forward to many more years of enjoyment from my system which I built more than 30 years ago.
