I call it reading the menu right to left.read down the list of whats available and find the price you can afford then scan left to see what you are going to be eating for dinner. For reference I have Klipsch main speakers and two Polk Audio subwoofers driven by a Yamaha 7.2 surround sound amplifier and get this.main rear speakers are a pair of 25 year old Cerwin Vega AT-12s I bought new in 1990. With digital music they do not do as well so they got moved to the rear in favor of the Klipsch front speakers. I decided to give these a try because I was able to find a pair through Amazon used and the price was right. They are used primarily as the deep rear although to test them i hooked them up as front main speakers. The direct reflecting technology does make a difference if the room you have them in supports it. Compared to the Klipsch these don't hold a candle but that is to be expected of smaller bookshelf speakers. What somewhat surprised me is that they also got smoked by a set of old Cerwin Vega speakers and not just in bass but in clarity and range. If you can get these speakers in good shape meaning they are cosmetically in good shape and don't have any major issues for around 100 dollars then go for it. If you are spending what it would cost to buy them new then there are far better alternatives on the market.No comparison to my 901's, but still very very nice.Listen, if you want a good stereo sound at a decent price - these SOUND good. They are full and responsive to almost every type of music you play through them. If you are looking for super Bass response you need a subwoofer but these suffice fine without one. Cheap but sound awesome. 301s are even better and 501s are better yet but these are great.Being hard of hearing, my previous speakers sounded a bit muffled. Maybe it wasn't just a result of my hearing. With the Bose, the dialogue is 100 clearer. The highs are now very crisp, but if you expect booming bass, forget it. I would have given the speakers five stars, but the case construction if cheap. I don't thing Bose even went as far as using particle board- anyhow, it sure doesn't seem like it. While his higher end stuff was dispersed amongst all the family, in the corner of his living room, buried behind alot of speakers was a set of Bose 501's series I that he had purchased many years ago and haven't been played in ages. While not alot of guys cup of tea, I'd really like to restore these and have them as a keepsake in his honour. What I've found so far is the woofers are non existent, the 4 tweeters are all functional and the crossovers need new caps and resistors. Anxious to see how these sound.You would be messing up the function of that crossover if you only put in one Cap. Best bet usually is to stay as close as you can to the original design. Get a 6 and a 3.7 cap or as close as you can.I wish I had the originals but there were none in the enclosure. I went with the closest valued capacitors I could find (3.3 and 5.6) and in series they equate to 2.1 uf where as the originals combined were 2.3 uf, close enough I'd think. I overlooked the fact that the resistor is in parallel with just the 3.7uf cap and not both, so I'll keep the design as original as possible.I just ordered them and they're on their way. I could very well be wrong though. Once I get the parts I'll connect everything and see what the final impedance is. PS. Turns out they are series II not series I, made a typo. Looks like that link is for series I. Not sure how much they changed them. Now that I can afford a used pair - I don't have the room to appreciate them!Unfortunately, Bose did not use that same woofer in much of any other models outside their private label, Interaudio 4000. I'd be inclined to go with that PE woofer linked above, too. Just get the 8 ohm version if they have it. I agree, the 501s sounded excellent with them spread out on a long wall with room on either side for the rear-facing tweeters. If you can, the sound field is very nice and full. They need to be up against a wall, however, for full bass to be realized. I sold many of those back in the day. They weren't as popular as the 301s and 601s, though, which were easier on placement. The goldwood woofer does a fantastic job of producing lows and mids cleanly and with impact, highs roll off a little early though.
