Timothy Lam 4.0 out of 5 stars My first set of Bose were the 601 series one. I still have them and they still sound great after 30 years although I did replace the bass drivers (due to foam rot). The 601s work on the same theory as the 901s - direct reflected sound. The speakers handle as little as 30 watts and I have driven them hard with 120watts per channel. Easy placement and they still pound. The 901's are somewhat different because speaker placement is critical. Simply following the guidelines in the manual is a good start, but all rooms have different sound dynamics so location refinement is essential to optimal listening. Once the speakers land in the 'g' spot (groove) they will come alive and consume the room with high fidelity like no other. Walk around the sound stage and be amazed. Deep sharp bass response, great highs and middles that can make you weep. I went through great pains to make sure placement was optimal, but I also concentrated my efforts on the cable and power plants as well. I used 8 gauge OFC twisted pair with platinum connectors on both ends. I powered the speakers with a 200 watt per channel Chiro amplifier and Mcintosh preamp. I also incorporated a Marantz AC3 digital processor for my Rotel CD player and 32bit computer driven MP3's. Lastly, I installed a Sunfire woofer in the mix and I used a Litespeed power conditioner to finish things off. The results were stunning. The power handling of these speakers are phenom. As good as any live performance you can imagine even better. Strengths: Powerful elegant functional loud and sweet. Sounds great in low level listening and awesome in loud rock music. Classical music lovers rejoice. Weaknesses: Room placement and distance from the wall might be a negative for some, but once you get it right, it's amazing!Please try again later. Please try again later.They should also be positioned away from the corners so that the outer speakers do not point toward room corners. They should also be 2 feet away from furnishings that are sound absorbing, like a couch for example. The above criteria alone will eliminate many rooms as a good choice for these speakers, unless they are hung from the ceiling to meet the criteria. To add a bit further to what the manufacturer recommends, I would suggest being a bit further back from the speakers than they are placed apart. For example, if they are approximately 8 feet apart, I would sit about 12 feet away for the best experience. That is more or less close to my positioning and the results have been excellent. The next thing to concider is that the Bose 901 VI -Must- be used with the original equalizer for proper function of these speakers. This is true of any series of the 901, dating all the way back to the originals produced in 1968. However, these options are not readily available on most of today's recievers, which are primarily for surround sound applications. The other option, which is likely the best option, is to use a separate amplifier and preamplifier, placing the EQ between the two. The rationale for separate components is higher quality amplification as well as higher power. It has been been pointed out many times that the 901 performs at its best by many users that high power amplification is important to the overall function of these speakers. I agree. Unfortunately, even though Bose has stores throughout the country, many do not display or carry the 901's, and those that do fail to display and demonstrate them with criteria as suggested above. The only place for a good audition will likely be in your own home. I would personally compare the sound of the 901's to the enjoyment of basking in sunlight. When the sun is shining, we enjoy the warmth and the beauty it brings to all the sights around us. However, if one can only enjoy the sun by trying to observe the details of it's surface, or by studying the sun itself, then the point is missed entirely. True, the Bose 901 VI may not get all the details, or all the details perfectly, but what it does offer is the warmth of its midrange, spaciousness and visceral impact. I then proceeded to put them on stands (5-7 feet high) and that is it. If you are playing then in a wedding hall, club, dance floor or an open space, reverse the speakers so the 8 drivers are facing the crowd. If listening to music and low levels, make sure there is a solid wall behind you and the 8 drivers face the wall (away from the listeners). Play as loud as you like. I saved my money and bought a Pioneer SX-1250 (200 watts per channel solid state receiver), a Bang and Olufsen turntable (forget the model) and a pair of Bose 901s. I had done a bit of research mainly by reading Consumer Reports magazines. The Bose 901 speaker system was regarded as the best speakers no matter the cost when compared to other speakers. To say that may be a stretch but for the money I will say the 1976 model Bose 901s lasted and held up to anything I have put them through which is to say three marriages, several homes and apartments, crazy parties, and a theft in which my speakers were recovered. I eventually purchased the Bose 901 Series Six models and now have four pair of those. I gave my old original speakers to my daughter and she says they still work great. Many young audiophiles have nothing good to say about anything related to Bose. While I certainly haven't listened to every high end speaker out there, I don't think one can do much better. Yes, you have plenty of people out there that'll spout off the quip, No highs, no lows - must be Bose. I couldn't disagree more. Most of these people compared the 901s to the speakers they bought only at the store and never looked back. The corner of the room. Probably not. That's the first caveat, though. When you get your 901s, read the manual. Twice. And get out a measuring tape. 901s have to be placed fairly precisely to get the best sound from them. The absolute best bet is to suspend them from the ceiling. If not, really, spring for the floor stands that are made for them. If you're going to set them on top of an entertainment unit or on end tables, you probably shouldn't get them. Second caveat - 901s really are primarily for stereo music (they're a surround system in and of themselves). While it is technically possible to use them as part of a 5.1 or 7.1 system, it's a major pain to really connect the power equalizer that's an integral part of a 901 setup into a home theater. If you're looking for speakers for a 5.1 or 7.1 setup, Bose is still the way to go, but get yourself some 301s, or look around for some used 601s or 701s. Anyway, get your 901s set up correctly and prepare to be blown away. And your audiosnob friends will probably razz you about buying into the Bose marketing machine, but just challenge them to bring their speakers over, put on some Bach organ works, and let them go head to head, and see if they're still spouting this no highs and no lows, Bose-is-just-hype junk. Yes, I agree, if Bose didn't spend so much hawking their Wave radios (which I'll agree with you - a 350-500 clock radio???) they could probably sell their real speakers more cheaply.
