Lesson: Feedback If you are getting low end feedback, especially with acoustic instruments try re-orienting the B1. Try different angles. You should get as much as 3 dB more than if you have them separated. This is due to acoustic coupling. This also avoids creating nulls. You can stack them or have them side-by-side but you want to keep them together. Lesson: Logos You can rotate the Bose logo so it is parallel to the floor even if you have turned the B1 on its side. It's easier to figure out that when the B1 is on it's side, port side up is same as (on the back) connection panel down. Cliff-at-Bose talks about Positioning the B1 and proximity to walls Easy ways to do this: Fold a B1 case and tuck it under the front or the back. If you have the logo bags with the wheels, then leaving the PowerStand in the case will naturally tip it down. I carry a couple of sheets of bubble pack packing material in the case and fold it to suit. Lesson: Be careful how you insert the lower section. If you insert it upside down you may damage the connector in the PowerStand. Kyle-at-Bose posted Pictures of the damage Lesson: If you notice a change in the propagation properties of the System, check that the sound is coming from both the top and bottom sections. If not, dissassemble and reassemble the L1 making sure that everything connects firmly. Lesson: Do not remove the Bayonet The Bayonet should not be removed from the top section of the L1. It may be a stretch at first, but you can get the top portion of the L1 into the carrying bag. Newer L1 Cylindrical Radiator(r) loudspeakers have bayonets with three holes.http://schlammatlas.de/en/node/15770 With the upper L1 on a table or floor, you can easily unscrew the two Phillips-head screws from the Bayonet and reposition the Bayonet so that it does not protrude as much out from the upper L1. On the other hand we are manufacturing to very tight specifications and tolerances. One L1 is virtually indistinguishable from the next one, so it's perfectly ok two swap speaker and power stands. No - Please don't try to connect more than one Remote to a Power Stand (or more than One Power Stand to a Remote) See: Daisy Chain Remotes Connecting the Remote - is it required. If you power up the System without the Remote Connected, the PowerStand operates as though the Remote is connected with all controls straight-up (12 o'clock) position. In general, it is not recommended to operate without the remote connected. The PS1 power stand can however function without the R1 remote control. Just remember, you probably want something that will be removable in case you change your mind. Tape it in one of the larger rectangles on the “channel 1 and 2 side” of the door. For at least one person the answer is Yes These can still be purchased separately as an option. Inserting the L1 bags in the panel pocket requires a fiar amount of fiddling. There are along list of reasons why we didn't make it loose (the major being if it's loose things get sloppy as you're wheeling the PS1 around with the L1's in place) so if you give this a try be warned.Once you get the L1's in the pockets, slip the buckle through the handle on the L1 bag and away you go. The handle is tough enough, but it may bend if you, for example, pull the system down a set of stairs with the L1's in the PS1 bag. If you use this option, PLEASE use good judgement and don't let the bag sit unattended. It balances but it's tippy. And treat the handle well, especially when fully extended. And you can use the buckles to connect the two L1's together and use one shoulder strap for two L1's (but it's heavy at 30lbs or so). Or use the buckles to attach a mic stand (folding legs kind). The same goes for even close miking of musical instruments. Actually, close miking of a Dobro might be fine in the flat setting, maybe turn up the HF on the remote for some sparkle. In the studio, a B57 sounds pretty useful 4-6 inches away from a guitar. Stay away from the sound hole if the sound gets too dark. Too much signal from the sound hole will also encourage low-mid feedback. As a hunch, try preset 35, assuming you recently purchased and these are v2 presets. This is probably the most radical one in the catalog, but will give you an idea of the extremes. It's for a very midrange-heavy electric guitar (PRS) to be played direct. Also, try all the presets on a spare evening alone. Lots of tone variations here. Forget the titles and just listen. Also, on the mics for singing, try presets 01-04 as an alternative to the ones we recommended for your mics. No one really knows the sound you want but you, when you hear it. About the presets: No mic that I know of sounds good for close vocal, even for recording for that matter. All our presets compensate for this. A lot of these mics sound a lot more natural when you back off a foot or so from them. Of course this is true in the studio too. No one does this for a live performance (backs very far off the mic) since you want to maximize gain before feedback by eating the mic. For those with mild to moderate hearing loss, studies have shown that personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) can be nearly as effective at around a fifth of the price. In some situations it improves hearing nearly as much as a hearing aid; it’s also the easiest to program, and it has a longer return period than most. As with hearing aids, no PSAP will work well for everyone, and shopping for one requires some trial and error. It also offers a Bluetooth connection, for taking calls and streaming music, and longer battery life than other, similar devices. The app also offers a quick hearing test to help you figure out which settings work best for you. A Bluetooth connection allows you to listen to music or take phone calls with the device. Sound World Solutions offers a return period of 45 days (longer than most), giving you more time to test the device before deciding whether it’s right for you. However, it lacks as many options to tailor the sound to your hearing needs and environment. Plus, it doesn’t have Bluetooth (so you’ll need to switch devices for other listening). We read the latest medical studies and editorial reviews of PSAPs and similar devices, plus tapped the audio expertise of Wirecutter senior staff writer Brent Butterworth, who covers everything from stereo receivers to over-ear headphones. Who this is for PSAPs often look like traditional hearing aids; the best ones can be nearly as functional for some people. Photo: Rozette Rago People with mild hearing loss who don’t want to pay several thousand dollars for traditional, fully programmable hearing aids may find personal sound amplification products (PSAPs) helpful. Unlike traditional hearing aids, PSAPs are available for purchase without professional guidance from an audiologist or another specialist. That said, even the best PSAPs won’t suit some people’s needs; in our testing, we found every one of them to be severely lacking in some respect. However, a 2019 JAMA study of 56 adults found that for people with mild to moderate hearing loss, PSAPs performed as well as basic and premium hearing aids. PSAPs are available for purchase without professional guidance from an audiologist or another specialist. That said, even the best PSAPs won’t suit some people’s needs. Not even a customized hearing aid that costs thousands of dollars can fully restore a person’s hearing. Should you decide to try a PSAP, you’ll be taking a risk, since the results may be less desirable than what you can get with a hearing aid. But you’ll be putting much less money on the line to find out (and if you remember to return within the company’s policy, you’ll be out only shipping costs). Should you see an audiologist. If you are considering buying a personal sound amplification product, you should first have a professional check your hearing to determine the extent of your hearing loss, or whether it’s just a matter of some built-up earwax. This exam is often covered by insurance. You can ask an audiologist for guidance on the process of getting a PSAP, too. But since most audiologists do not sell PSAPs—and do make money from selling and programming hearing aids—your mileage will vary in this regard. Typically you won’t find a payment structure for an audiologist to help you set up a PSAP, as it’s meant to be a do-it-yourself device. (In fact, two researchers we spoke with who study PSAPs—including one who sees patients—both recommended getting help setting up these devices, but neither could suggest how much that might cost.) How we picked Grabbing any old personal sound amplification product off the shelf is a shot in the dark. “Ninety-five percent are junk,” said Nicholas Reed, an audiologist at Johns Hopkins University, in a phone interview. They’re too loud, they garble sound, they end up blocking your hearing (like earplugs), or they don’t cover the right range of frequencies to effectively address even mild hearing loss. Wirecutter senior staff writer Dan Koeppel, who has hearing loss, was adamant that he needed the feature, because it’s disruptive to switch back and forth between headphones for music and a hearing aid. We considered some devices without that functionality, too, since people who don’t walk around with earbuds all the time may not need it. The downside of Bluetooth-enabled PSAPs is a much shorter battery life. An effective PSAP covers all the frequencies at which you have hearing loss. For most people, this means the device should span from 250 Hz to at least 6,000 Hz, said Reed, though a broader range is even better. Some people may find it disruptive to switch back and forth between headphones for music and a hearing aid for listening. Specs aside, the key to avoiding a junky PSAP (or a poor-quality “ hearable ” that amplifies sound) is to buy one that a third party has thoroughly tested. To that end, we used lists of devices vetted by researchers and Consumer Reports, and then searched for additional devices that looked promising but had not yet gone through independent testing. We relied heavily on a 2017 study by Reed and colleagues, published in JAMA. We wanted a generous return period, 30 days at minimum. It’s important to spend a couple of weeks testing the device in a few environments. A PSAP that works well for conversations on the couch, for example, may not do well in a noisy restaurant. How we tested We took PSAPs to all the places we go. Photo: Rozette Rago Four volunteers—two people in their 70s and a person in their 30s, all with mild hearing loss, and a person in their 20s with no hearing loss—spent time wearing PSAPs as part of their daily routines: out to stores, restaurants, yoga classes, the dog park, and while lounging or watching TV at home. They reported subjective feedback on what it’s like wearing these devices. Although our testers found the top-performing PSAPs generally helpful, they agreed that each model they tested had serious flaws, such as a low battery life, a hopelessly unfashionable look, or the feel of a pair of earplugs. We also asked Wirecutter senior staff writer and audio measurement expert Brent Butterworth to test the PSAPs from a technical standpoint, to make sure our picks conform to generally accepted guidelines for hearing assistance devices—in other words, that they amplify the sounds that need amplifying, and not the ones that don’t. To do this, Brent put each PSAP into the same GRAS Model 43AG Ear and Cheek Simulator he uses for headphone measurements. The PSAPs we tested aren’t all that different from one another, for the most part. This graph shows how some of the PSAPs we tested process the sound going into the ear. Human conversation ranges from about 100 Hz to 4 kHz, but higher frequencies are where consonants occur and where most hearing loss occurs, which is why most PSAPs focus their boost somewhere between about 800 Hz and 4 kHz. Some of the PSAPs also boost sound somewhere between 5 kHz and 8 kHz; research shows that this probably doesn’t help people with severe hearing loss, but it may aid speech comprehension for people with only light hearing loss. We’re excited to see what the future of PSAPs will bring, but in the meantime, some of the current offerings stood out from the pack. In a sound-booth test for a study published in JAMA, our favorite PSAP performed nearly as well as a traditional hearing aid and better than competing PSAP devices, improving the research participants’ hearing by 11 compared with no assisting device. It covers frequencies from 200 Hz to 7,300 Hz—not the largest range we’ve seen, but significantly larger than some of the competition and above the minimum of 6,000 Hz that audiologist Nicholas Reed recommends. It’s the only device that administers a hearing test (with the help of an app) to suggest settings.
