By default, the FreeSpace 4400 Installer software tries to locate a hardware device on the COM 1 serial port. If the FreeSpace 4400 system is not detected on COM 1, the software displays a “Choose COM port” dialog box asking you to select the correct serial port. Connect your PC to the FreeSpace 4400 system. Using a serial cable (not supplied), connect the RS-232 seri al port of your laptop PC to th e RS-232 serial port on the rear panel of the FreeSpace 4400 system. Programmer’ s Note: If your computer does not have an RS-232 port you will need to use an RS-232 to USB adapter. Programmer’ s Note: The RS-232 port should only be used to connect a FreeS pace 4400 system to a PC. 2. Set the FreeSpace 4400 rear panel POWER switch to ON. Ve r i f y t h a t t h e ST ANDBY indicator is lit on the FreeSpace 4400 front panel. Then press the ST ANDBY push button to switch the FreeSpace 4400 hardware to the opera ting mode. By default, the FreeSpace 4400 Installer software tries to locate a hardware device on the COM 1 serial port. If the FreeSpace 4400 system is not detected on COM 1, the softwar e displays a “Choose COM port” dialog box asking you to select the correct serial port. Programmer ’ s Note: If you encounter the “Choose COM port” dialog box, immedi ately follow the displayed recommendations fo r corr ecting the prob lem. DO NOT click the Cancel button until after tr ying each of the given recommendations. Programmer ’ s Note: Befo re dismissing the “C hoose COM port” dialog, select the COM 2 port and click Tr y Again. Not doing this will cause th e COM 1 port to be locked. After your PC successfully connects to th e FreeSpace 4400 hard - ware, the Choose COM port dialog should automatically close. If not, close the window manual ly. 5. If you have co nnected to a new FreeSpace 4400 sys - tem, use the FreeSpace 4400 front panel window to set up the hardware. At this point in the install ation, the software looks for a connected FreeSpace 4400 system, and if found, then checks to see what version firmware is running in the Free Space 4400 system. If you get a “No har dware detected” dialog, see “No hardwar e detect ed” on page 26. If you get an Incompatible Microcontr oller code dialog, see “Incompatible micr ocontrolle r code” on page 26. See “Sample design files” on page 26. Programmer’ s Note: T o configure a FreeSpace 4400 system, the F reeSpace 4400 system must be powered up. DO NOT switch the FreeSpace 4400 system to ST ANDBY mode while the FreeSpace 4400 Installer software is running. Then, finish the in stallation and configu re your hardwar e device. Programmer ’ s Note: Upgrading new software does not change any of your current configurat ion settings. Programmer ’ s Note: The FreeSpace 4400 Business Music System is only compat ible with the FreeSpace 4400 Installer software. The FreeS pace 4400 syst em is incom- patible with the FreeSpace E4 system's FreeSpac e Installer software. T o open the sample design file: 1. Click the Open file tool in the Free Space 4400 Installer software wi ndow. 2. Select the name of the sa mple design file in your FreeSpace 4400 Installer software directory: C:\Program Files\FreeSpace 4400 Installer 1.0.0. 3. Click the Open button in the dialog box. 4. When you click one of these buttons, the event is added to the list and t he controls for the selected ev ent are dis - played in the Event control panel. Any ch anges made to these settings are reflected in the event listing. The Set Clock bu tton is used to set or change the clock. The Clock Settings window opens, allowing you to make adjustments to the date and time. At this point you can c hange the event settings. When the event list exceeds the length of the pane, t he software will a dd a scroll bar on the right side. A maximum of 64 events may be added to a system. This means that the total number of events from all event lists must not exceed 64. A n On-Off event consumes two e vents, while source change, volume c hange, and Auto V olume events consume one apiece. A counter is provided in the Schedule mode window to keep track of the number of remaining events. Zone events programm ed to occur at the same time as a “Sys - tem ON” event will not occur. T o ensure that zone events will hap - pen, they must be programmed to occur 15 minutes after the “System ON” event. For example, if a “System ON” event is pro - grammed to occur at 8:00 AM, the first zone event should be pro - grammed to occur at 8:15 AM. Installer’s Note: Flashing the Fre e Space 4400 Installer soft- ware configuration fi le to the FreeSpace 4400 system sets the default state of the system when it is turned on. Whenever possible the default state of the system should be set to meet the requirements most likely to occur after a scheduled “Sys- tem ON” event. Y ou can select indi - vidual on or off times for the day(s) you choose. Or, you can select on and off times in a single statement. Adds a zone V olume Change event This event allows you to change the volume level at a specified time on selected days of the week. T o adjust these limit stops, select the Ou tput Gain fu nction in the Set Up Hard- ware mode. Programmer’ s Note: Events are only saved to the FreeSpace 4400 system wh en you click the (Flash Hardware Configur ation) button. 5.5.3 Viewing and changing event settings T o view any event and change the settings, first click the system or one of the zone tabs. Then select an event in the list to display the event settings in the control pane. Now, you can edit the set - tings just as when a n event is added. 5.5.4 Removing events from the list T o remove an event from the list, select the event by clicking on it and then click the (Remove Event) button. Programmer ’ s Note: After changing an y event settings or removing an event from the list, you must flash the hardware in order for th e change to ta ke effect. If you are alr e ady connected to hardware, the Err or Log is retrieved from the har dware and displayed in the window. If not yet con - nected, select th e hardwar e in the System Overview pane and after establishing the connec tion, click (Detect Hardwa re) and then click. When the FreeSpace 4400 system is powered on, it performs a self-test. Any err ors detected during a powe r -on cycle are appended to the Error Log. Likewi se, any errors detected during normal operation are appended to the Error Log. The Err or Log provides diagnostic information for repair technicians to help them repair the system. The buttons below the Error Log display allow you to manage the Error Log information: Uploads the current Er ror Log listing from the hardware. If you recently cleared th e log, the Error Log will con - tain information reported only since t he time you clea red it. Exports the Error Log to your hard drive as a text file. Clears the Error Log fr om the window and the FreeSpace 4400 system. Hardwar e version numbers T ype of alarm Name of test T est results Service Hardware button Error Log When the FreeSpace 4400 system is power ed up and ready, the SYSTEM ST A TUS indicator is dark (unlit) and the ST ANDBY indicator is amber. 3. Press the ST ANDBY push button to switch the FreeSpace 4400 system to the operating mode. The ST ANDBY indicator will turn off and the SYSTEM ST A TUS indi cator will be green. (If a system fault condition exists, the indicator will be red.) Programmer’ s Note: If the Fr eeSpace 4400 system experiences a brownout or power l o ss, the FreeSpace 4400 system will return to power in the ST ANDBY mode.The configuration contains the “start-up” settings for the FreeSpace 4400 system. Once y o ur work is completed and flashed to the FreeSpace 4400 hardware, the new settings become the startup co nfiguration. 1. Select Output Gain for each zone and mu te the output. This prevents any damage to loud speakers during this proce - dure. This also allows you to work without disturbing any other people in your work ar ea. See “Ou tput gain” on this page. 2. Set up the ZONE for each output channel. Choose a Speaker EQ (default is No EQ) for the speakers you are using. Y ou can use the Subzones table to documen t your subzones. See “Zone setup” on page 36. 3. Set up the Input Gain con trols for each sour c e. Choose set - tings for input type, gain, and source leveling. See “Output gain” on this page. 5. Select Source Assign for each zone and assign sources for each. See “Source EQ” on page 40. 7. Select Page Set Up. See “Page setup” on page 40. 8. Select EQ for each zone. See “Zone EQ” on p age 42. 9. Select the Dynamic EQ state for each zone. Se e “Dynamic EQ” on page 43. 10. Set up Auto V olume. See “Auto V olume” on page 43. 11. Create a Syste m Schedule. See the “Set Up Schedule mode” on page 30. 12. Click the flash configuration bu tton in the upper toolbox. Y ou will be asked to confirm that you wan t to save the configura - tion to the FreeSpace 4400 hardware.
