There's no subwoofer, so I didn't expect a lot of base.Do NOT expect this to sound like a thousand dollar system and do NOT expect the type of base you would get with a good subwoofer. Base is there, it sounds good, but it's not what it would be with bigger and more expensive speakers. I replaced an older pair of Logitek speakers that had a subwoofer and can't say that I hear any LESS base than I could with the prior system, and the sound is crisper and clearer. The older speakers were a bit aged, and the subwoofer on the older system didn't get a lot of power. These speakers are NOT omnidirectional, so you have to be able to position them well.The speaker cords could have been longer; that would have helped. The price was good. I'm happy enough with these that I would buy them again at the Amazon price in a second. I put on music and concentrate on my work on the computer and have music, not any disappointment from the speakers. HOWEVER, there is one thing that annoys me GREATLY about these speakers. I have VERY LIMITED space, so I have to keep the speakers together on my very small desk. MikeWolf4Runner 5.0 out of 5 stars These Bose 20s beat them all, and it's not close. These are a nice compliment to my Bose Soundtouch 30s for my home-office, which I use for general music-listening tapped off my iPad or iPhone (the Bose 30 is an awesome standalone system by the way). Back to the Bose 20s: the sound-output and quality is incredible considering that these are only a pair of speakers that take up very little room and do not have a separate subwoofer unit. I like the small rotating disk that allows volume-control. I have limited room for computer speakers because of my gear-setup. I installed small shelves above my monitors for these Bose 20s and they sound great. Whether you are listening to Beethoven, Black Sabbath, Slayer, or watching or listening (or both) to something work-related like a crime-scene video, a 911-call, a news report, a YouTube video, or gaming with Fight Night or Battlefield 4 (I do it all), these speakers won't let you down. When listening to a song by a band that has a great guitarist, bassist, and drummer, you can clearly distinguish between the players on these speakers. When listening to a stream that has background noise (like a news report where some fool is blabbing in the background), you clearly hear what the background-blabber is saying. Like any good speakers, the quality of the input-data is important, so the better the quality of the input, the better you will hear the output. Thus, for the best experience with these Bose 20s, if you are listening to an oldie but goodie, I recommend you upgrade to the remastered version. You won't be disappointed.It immediately occurred to me it's been a very long time since I actually HEARD music. I don't know a thing about base and woofers and whatever. I just know I love these speakers. Now please go away. I'm listening to Ernesto Cortazar.After shopping various speaker options, I chose these mainly for the Bose quality sound which has delivered as expected. There are a few things that I do not like about these speakers. First, the cord between the two speakers is too short for the shelves I intended to place them on. Secondly, the power saving feature kicks on every 30 mins or so cutting off my music until I tap the control unit or wiggle the volume. That has been my number one grievance with the product so far. Finally, as a few other reviewers noted, there is a significant amount of feedback buzz when the unit is on in standby. I attribute the feedback to other power cords in proximity to the speaker wires, but it is enough to be annoying. If you're in the market, I'd suggest saving some money and considering one of Bose's wireless options.EDIT: but you can clean it !!! When playing music and not even touching the volume knob the volume fluctuates. When adjusting the volume with the knob the volume fluctuates erratically. I have been living with this failing for too much now, and because it cannot be even repaired, I will write this review as a warning to others. Below is the useless solution from BOSE guys: Perform a product reset by following these steps: 1.Turn off the device connected to the system 2.Unplug the power cord of the system from the power outlet. Wait 30 seconds 3.Reconnect the power cord 4.Retest the system I read dozens the same issue happening to other users with no REAL SOLUTION other than replacing the knob. Cleaning it's not possible since it's just not designed for any kind of maintenance. The day that BOSE gives any solution, or even reply to their customers, I would consider to think again that they are a quality brand the use to be. EDIT: Finally I could cleaned it myself:) Below the pod, removed the rubber and find a screw. After opened the pod I sprayed it with electronic contact cleaner, and brushed it all. Sounds like new!!!However, if you have more space there are definitely better options. These are the typical Bose heavy bass sound. Their speakers always sound muffled because they rely on an exaggerated low-end. Even when equalized, they sound pretty meh. Again, for the size, they produce interest low-ends that I did not expect. Bose just can't compete in high-end audio. They stamp a high-end price tag on their speakers and talk a big game, but in the end they are outclassed for lower prices. EDIT: After using these for a while longer, they are in-fact really great as long as you EQ them. These speakers sound like a pretty high-end 2.1 sound system when they are EQ'd. You have to bring down both the mid and low frequencies, quite a bit actually. If you do not EQ them, they sound REALLY muddy. EDIT 2: These sound pretty bad actually. The more that I listen to these, the worse they are. They sound muddy, they lack clarity, they overall just sound bad. I do buy high-end audio equipment though, these are pretty low-end. I am probably going to find a way to fit my Energy bookshelf speakers on my desk with limited space, as they even sound a million times better than these. Bose is pretty much garbage in all their products, low-end products sold for a premium price.Only one connection necessary to the computer, the headphone jack. I have large collection of classical ballets and opera on the computer hard drive and mass storage H.D. I can play them now with a quality sound track I never experienced till now. Unlike some other reviews, I don't find the base to be too pronounced or woefully absent. I find it to be just right. Like every speaker (especially small ones) there is a bit of distortion at high volume, and it doesn't fill some rooms as much as some reviewers have claimed (but to be fair I'm in a large bachelor apartment that is an irregularly shaped room with angled cathedral ceilings: a challenge for any sound system). If money is not a prime consideration and you want high fidelity and are willing to pay for it, you can't go wrong with these. FYI it ships in a box that identifies the contents, unless you specify otherwise.
