I didn't purchase the whole set, just the bass module and hooked it together with my Bose VS 101 monitor speakers, I would say it sounded better than its satellite speakers, which is a given, because of a larger driver. As I cranked up the volume playing an action move I was blown away of the quality and clarity from the cubes and nice acoustic theater like bass coming from the module. Got my hands on a Harmon Kardon DPR 1005 using a fiber optical cable for true dolby digital. These speakers have truly came to life.For those who say that this is hardly a sub at all, I cannot relate in that field, I know that when I first hooked up the HK to this it had no bass at all, because the front speakers MUST be dialed to Large speakers and I disabled the sub output which then throws all the low frequencies to the front speakers. On the other hand, I have owned powered subwoofers in the past and found myself adjusting the subwoofer volume pretty frequently depending upon the nature of the music and the amplifier volume; it's sort of refreshing not to have to deal with that, but I do miss having genuinely responsive bass at low volumes. The cubes are pretty astonishing, with beautiful clarity at any volume. If I had a somewhat bigger room and thicker walls I don't think I'd have any complaints at all. I don't particularly mind the bass shortcomings when I'm listening to recent rock and roll because there's way too much of it anyway (the Troggs sound a bit thin), but classical and jazz lose a lot of depth at low volume when the bottom's not all there. The cable that came with the system was great. I will be adding a bose center channel speaker to complete the set up. It works great with my Sony STR-DH720 receiver and other components. However, if you are planning on adding this to an existing 5.1 or 7.1 system be aware that the Bose Acousticmass 3 series IV has only two connections, a Left and Right, from the bass module, and the cube speakers connect to the bass module to balance the range. The manual specifically states NOT to connect the speakers nor the bass module differently as it may damage the units. I am currently using the Bose Acousticmass 3 series IV as the rear channels in conjunction with a pair of Bose 201 for the Front channels for in the TV room--it sounds great. Sometimes it sounds just fine and sometimes it likes to be boomy. Overall the bass just doesnt cut it for me. It's decent but the measly 6.5' woofer just isn't enough to produce deep, satisfying bass. I dont listen to earth shattering bass but i like to know it's there.
