The time it takes to do the mod (assuming one knows how to solder well) is about an hour and 20 minutes when working carefully (the ONLY way to work). The extra bright blue LED is gravy:) On stage, I can now tell when the effect is engaged. At the Amazon asking price, it's almost a give-away deal. I'm recommending Fromel kits to ALL of my customers. My next purchase will be the Supreme Mod kit for my personal Fender (USA) Blues Deluxe. I am SO looking forward to that. Follow this Product Overview From '82 to '92, the Boss CE-3 Chorus Ensemble was the workingman's chorus effect, heard on countless recordings and seen on thousands of players' pedalboards. Boss chorus pedals have a strong legacy connected to Andy Summers, John Frusciante, and Herbie Hancock among others. Mostly known as the stereo version of the earlier Boss CE-2, the CE-3 had a slightly sharper tone. Why buy new when you can get a made-in-Japan classic for half the price. Often, small film companies independently make these kinds of films but occasionally it’s the big Hollywood studios that make a movie which stays in the cultural landscape, even if the initial box office numbers may suggest otherwise.http://quickfix-poland.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626d8e35db97a---3m-x62-manual.pdf BOSS engineers studied the waveforms of Marshall amps on an oscilloscope and developed the HM-2 to replicate the characteristic midrange grind. It came out like a more compressed version of the Marshall amp sound. Nevertheless, on its release to market in 1983 it sold quite well to legions of guitarists in the “spandex and big hair” era. The groundbreaking parametric EQ on the MT-2 was a major technological leap that enabled the Metal Zone to generate a much wider variety of tones than the HM-2 could. Within 7 months of the Metal Zone’s release, production of the HM-2 ceased forever. It’s a subtle effect that has in the past, fooled some guitarists into thinking it is a “bypass” effect. To others though, the EH-2 is a studio or performance tool like no other. It filters off the high frequencies of your guitar tone, and amplifies them (while also generating harmonic overtones). The amount of amplification depends on how hard you play the guitar, i.e. the harder you play, the more the treble frequencies (and overtones) are amplified. In a final neat trick, when you mix these tones in with the original signal (via the MIX knob), you can either select between mixing in a regular polarity signal or a polarity-inverted one.Along with a unique pastel lavender paint job, there’s not a single knob to be found anywhere on the DC-2 chassis. In fact, its entire complement of user controls are 4 push buttons which allows the user to select one of the DC-2’s 4 preset sounds. That’s right, presets on a stompbox! At its heart, the Dimension D contained two independent BBD-driven analog chorus units. These dual choruses were preset to VERY subtle depth rates, but the intermodulation between the independent chorus lines and the clever stereo processing meant that the unit created an incredible feeling of depth or added “dimension”, hence the name.asian-autoparts.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/carrier-40mvc-manual.pdf The large 2U rackmount SDD-320 was an instant hit upon its 1979 release and became a recording studio staple, becoming a significant constituent of the stereo “sparkly” sound that was familiar on 1980’s pop radio hits. The DC-2 Dimension though, was an entirely new flavour that delivered unprecedented levels of spaciousness and texture to guitar tones with its highly refined, ambient sound. Presumably, in a boardroom decision to incorporate economies of scale, the BOSS designers were tasked to create an effect that used the same circuit that the NF-1 Noise Gate pedal used. From this brief came the idea to completely reverse the operation of a noise gate (which allows the note attack, then clamps down on the tail) and create a unit that muted the attack and swelled the volume of the note tail. However, the knobs on a Les Paul are positioned much more awkwardly to achieve this same effect. The concept of the SG-1 Slow Gear was to recreate this swell effect, completely automatically. Development dragged on much longer than expected, until eventually a suitable result was reached, and the resulting pedal was christened “Slow Gear”. The user demand wasn’t there and production of the pedal ceased within 3 years of its introduction. When the BOSS division of Roland first emerged in 1976, they repurposed the chorus effect from Roland’s famous JC-120 amplifier and made it available in a (gigantic) AC powered foot pedal, named the CE-1 Chorus Ensemble. Though the CE-1 had a slow start, it soon became a huge hit thanks to use by Herbie Hancock and Andy Summers of The Police amongst others and was largely responsible for getting the BOSS brand off the ground. This was no small task and the BOSS engineers took two years to be able to achieve this engineering feat, but the result was worth it. In October 1979, the CE-2 Chorus pedal was released and still stands today as perhaps the most famous chorus pedal ever and a benchmark by which all other chorus pedals are judged.http://www.theagentpipeline.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626d8e46c757a---3m-x65-manual.pdf The CE-2 Chorus adds all the depth and sparkle that are BOSS Chorus hallmarks, but also adds a fat, thick midrange boost when engaged that turned out to be a famous and sought after characteristic of the CE-2’s tone. For many players however, (including some of the biggest names in the guitar world), the CE-2 continues to be their go-to chorus pedal and one of the most loved BOSS pedals of all time. The first 3 pedals to roll off the line were the PH-1 Phaser, the OD-1 Overdrive and the SP-1 Spectrum. Although some users found great use in its ability to sound like a cocked wah-wah or its ability to allow an instrument to pierce through a dense mix, most musicians were somewhat perplexed by the SP-1. Sales were slow and the SP-1 was discontinued from production in 1981. Keyboard and electric piano players however, did hold it in high esteem during its initial run. No self-respecting BOSS junkie can claim their pedal collection is complete without an SP-1 Spectrum on hand. This fact has driven second hand prices into the stratosphere, as rabid collectors enter into bidding wars over this most elusive of pedals. Indeed, it hadn’t been an easy feat. The custom IC chip (the same as found in the legendary SDE-3000 rack delay) could only just fit within the compact chassis, and the engineering team had an immense struggle trying to fit in all the rest of the supporting circuitry. The fact that they managed to do so was an engineering marvel, and after the public had picked their jaws up from the floor, they started buying the DD-2 in huge numbers, despite its substantial price tag. BOSS passed on these savings to the customer by dropping the price of the DD-2, however as the RAM prices kept falling further, an interesting decision was made. Although it has seen a couple of design revisions over the years due to component availability, today’s DD-3 pedal is still essentially the same design as the DD-2 pedal that first blew minds back in 1983.http://xn--80akij1ajew.xn--p1ai/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1626d8e52ce99f---3m-x75-user-manual.pdf Collectors of course, still clamour to get their hands on a DD-2 for the sake of history, and indeed it is the pedal’s place in history that defines the DD-2 as a cult classic. Tremolo was seen as an antiquated 1960’s effect and the PN-2 didn’t find much favour.Really, why would you? DD-200 vs DD-500 If you’ve seen its powerhouse big brother, the DD-500, you might be asking, why would I. The CE-2 builds on the legacy of the CE-1 with reduced features: mono output instead of stereo, no vibrato mode, no integrated power supply, no level and no intensity controls. The CE-2 has higher input impedance and boosted mid frequencies, both arrangements very suitable for electric guitars. Roland stopped marketing the CE-2 in 1982, however still produced until 1990. There are basically 3 versions of the pedal: Some early stand-alone stompboxes like Vibra-Chorus and Uni-Vibe by Shin-Ei were released in 1960s, creating some degree of phase shifting or chorus modulation. The CE-2 follows the same tonal response. The usual delay times are around 5 to 50ms and LFO oscillating frequencies are up to 20Hz. CE-2 uses triangle LFO waveforms. There are several possibilities: Hearing both signals together the chorus effect is created. The input and output circuits use the dual op-amp uPC4558C IC, while the LFO is implemented with the help of a TL022LP op-amp. Some additional active filtering is applied using Sallen-Key transistor stages. The effect response is commanded using two controls: The top of the board contains all the pads to attach the cables to be connected to the jack connectors, potentiometers, and the footswitch. It also carries other benefits like the number of components used in the pedal and using a light indicator and a power-on LED at the same time. The JFET Bypass Switch enables two possible toggle configurations: The VR 3 potentiometer is able to finely trim the 4.5 voltage: sometimes due to the loading of all stages, the 4.aryanrealty.com/ckfinder/userfiles/files/carrier-40mvc-installation-manual.pdf5 voltage might suffer some offset, the BBDs are sensitive to the bias, adjusting VR3 will bring maximum clean headroom. The 9V regulated line will bring the supply for the Bucket Brigade Stage, rejecting high-frequency harmonics which are especially harmful in BBDs signal processing due to the clocking noise of the MN3101 clock driver. This pedal was originally designed for an external 12V ACA supply adapter. The series resistor R53 and diode D5 between the minus input on the power jack and ground are used to reduce the internal voltage supply. The voltage drop over the resistor and diode will under-power the pedal making the power-on LED glow faintly. One easy solution is to use a daisy chain cable together with another standard pedal. The link between the two pedals will short the resistor-diode circuit and the pedal will receive full power. It also separates the guitar from any pedal DC potential, protecting the pickups in case of circuit failure. But applying the same filtering to the delay signal, the output signal will reduce any hiss acquired via the delay path. Boss CE-2 uses the op-amp inverting architecture. It is also implemented over the 4558 dual op-amps and designed to attenuate the magnitude of the high frequencies with respect to the mid-low frequencies. This filter takes the unnatural sounding pre-emphasized audio and turns it back into its original response. These are generated at integer multiples of the sample rate. The ideal filter specification is the same as that for the anti-aliasing filter. In this way, the input signal is bandlimited to prevent aliasing. The cut-off frequency can be calculated as: The output signal must be bandlimited, to remove the clock noise and prevent aliasing (meaning Fourier coefficients being reconstructed as low-frequency waves, not as higher frequency aliases). The cut-off frequency can be calculated as: After the delay stage, slightly more bass pass through the circuit. At the same time, a Low-Frequency Oscillator (LFO) is needed to drive the MN3101 in order to generate the variable delay time which is the gist of the chorus effect. It is used to discharge the C 22 47pF timing capacitor, which is charged through the R 38 150K resistor. Indeed, Q 5 together with the MN3101 will oscillate by itself at a constant frequency without Q 4 and its associated components. The cycle repeats at an ultrasonic rate. Immediately after C 22 discharge, the diode D1 is needed to isolate the output of Q4 transistor. As the LFO cycles, the delay time goes up and down and therefore the delayed audio pitch slightly shifts up and down. Some ticking can be mixed with the audio when the LFO produces the rising or falling edge of a square wave and there is a very sudden surge in the current. This simple circuit provides a variable frequency triangular waveform whose amplitude is also variable. The oscillation frequency can be calculated following the formula of the Triangle Oscillator by Ron Mancini: The action of VR2 will modify the steepness of the ramp and therefore the amplitude or depth at a fixed frequency. Many of the Boutique Chorus pedals out there are based on this circuit. Our modification kit for the Boss CE-3 includes all the parts and detailed instructions with color photos for all the following mods to turn a good chorus into a great chorus that rivals the boutique pedals at a fraction of the cost. All the slow speeds are still available but now the range is increased. The stock CE-3 can be a little on the subtle side, with this mod you have greater maximum depth, without losing any of the more shallow settings. Takes a mass produced effect and gives it the sonic quality of boutique chorus pedals costing twice as much. Why you ask? We are no. The CE-5 began as a continuation of the same chorus circuit as the Boss CE-2 and CE-3. The General Information section elaborates on how the CE-5 unfolded.Opinions of the digital (post-2001) version of CE-5 tend not to be positive. When Output B is used, Output A is pure wet signal. This forces all the wet signal through Output A and the dry signal into Output B. The wet signal is vibrato. When combined (summed) with a non-modulated dry signal, the result is heard by the human ear as a chorus sound. If using this trick be aware that without the effect level at Max, the wet signal will not have unity with the dry signal, causing a volume loss when engaged. This effect still gets rave reviews on both the lushness and subtlety of the chorus effect. The earlier CE-5 models share the same pedigree (and MN3007 bucket-brigade delay chip) as the CE-2 and CE-3 and are valued for such. Later models of the CE-5 discard the older analog design and use a new digital architecture. Panasonic stopped producing the MN3007 chip, causing Boss to change to the new digital architecture. If the pedal is white, it's newer and will be digital. If it's dark grey, it's the digital version. If they'll open the pedal up and take a shot of the PCB, even better. This is because when you find a seller of an analog CE-5, he or she will likely be unaware of any difference.
