And finally after 5 or so more years of doing nothing at my place I got to play more with it. But upon closer look, this thing is not bad at all. Back in the day, multi-effect pedals were basically just a couple of standard pedals jammed in the same box, unlike modern digital simulators that just try to digitally emulate the sound of the actual pedals. That allows you to place compressor and overdrive in front of the amp and place delay and chorus in your amp’s FX-loop.http://www.pharma-tools.eu/galeria/file/bose-headphones-quietcomfort-2-manual.xml Or, it can be used the same way to place compressor and overdrive in front of a tube preamp and have the delay and chorus after the tube preamp. BE-5 compressor seems to be doing to job just fine, but my unit developed a slight fuzzy overtone that is audible at any level of compression. It’s not bad when playing through an amplifier, especially if using overdrive, but I can definitely hear it when playing clean through the headphones. It’s a great idea because you can have the distortion or overdrive, but also everything in between, just by blending them together. Distortion side is similar to DS-1, with two clipping diodes after the first op-amp stage, producing harsher clipping. It’s really useful, can be used on a clean channel of the amp or to push an already overdriven amp into saturated goodness. There is no bypass switch for noise suppressor, so you can only turn it all the way down. However, it still seems to cut some noise even turned down. There’s no tap tempo or tone control, just simple controls for setting level of echoes, number of repeats and delay time (up to one second). Repeats are very clean with no added noise. Older DD-3 pedals that share the circuit with BE-5 are sought after for their clean and natural sound that still has some warmth and doesn’t sound sterile. Those chips are still highly desirable. It features rate and depth controls without any tone shaping, just like CE-2. Sound ranges from subtle chorus that can add dimension to distorted chords (think Zakk Wylde or Petrucci) or lush deep chorus suitable for three-dimensional cleans, especially with a little of delay added. It’s really nice sounding, simple chorus. There are two mono output plugs labeled A and B. When only Output A is used, the pedal mixes dry signal with modulated vibrato signal, producing chorus effect. Very cool! Everything is packed on a big PCB and circuit layout is not great.https://formations.fondationmironroyer.com/en/node/8723 It looks like someone arranged pots and jacks where they wanted them to be and left the auto-router algorithm (from the 80s) to layout everything else. Digital delay chip is all the way on the other side of the board, right next to the compressor circuit, there’s gazillion of jumpers and other stuff that indicates that not much effort was put into making a nice layout. Luckily, it’s not bad enough to cause any noise issues. It hasn’t been used much, at least not in the last decade, but the old Sanyo electrolytics seem to hold well. I’m considering re-capping it in the near future just as a precaution. Most of the pots are good, but few started crackling when turned. Cleaning them might help, but it’s not a big deal. Enclosure is made of plastic and although it’s ugly as hell, it tough plastic. Surprisingly, the inside of the enclosure is made of conductive plastic that is slightly gray-ish, compared to the black outer layer. I was surprised to find that it doesn’t produce any noise even in the plastic enclosure, but conductive plastic shell helps shield the circuit from noise. I took it apart and found that cheap plastic actuator was worn off and wasn’t making a good contact with the small momentary switch on the board. It’s an easy problem to fix, I just put a drop of epoxy on each of the actuators exactly on the place that makes contact with the switch when pressed (see below). That solved the problem. Luckily, it fixed the issue, so I didn’t have to dig deeper. I couldn’t find exactly the same square switches, but I found very similar rectangular ones that have the same pinout and same height and they work flawlessly. Every effect inside is very usable, obviously taken from standalone Boss pedals from that period. FX loop is great thing to have. I’m considering doing a complete rehousing into a metal enclosure with proper off-board metal foot-switches. Then it could be used even on its own.http://enviedoptique.com/images/boss-be5-b-manual.pdf Finally pulled it out and bought a new power supply for it, but when I tried it will not power on.It works as well as the day i bought it.I’m searching but not having much luck finding something small enough. Thanks! Mouser has a bunch of them, just search for normally OFF through-hole SPST tactile switches.People can’t see past the ugly plastic exterior, it’s a great unit! Not my favourite OD sound, but it’s usable. My problem is with the compressor, which has gotten so noisy, I find it unusable, other than with heavy distortion. Sort of a buzzy quality. Any ideas what I should look at. I’m not an electronics expert, but I’ve wired new pickups into my guitars, so I have a bit of a clue, and willingness to open things up and tinker. I also have a BE-5B which has a nice quiet limiter circuit that used to sound similar to the BE-5’s until that one got noisier. I checked out youtube demos and they all sounded fine with none of the fuzzyness I was getting. So there was obviously something wrong. I checked out the circuit diagram and changed the upc1252 (again bought off ebay). Totally cured it! I plan to buy one 2nd hand and this is what I neeeded to know. The Clean Boost mod is not part of the compressor, it is an add on to the unit, complete with a volume, footswitch and LED. I believe they clone an Xotic EP Booster and add it to the existing layout (add on board). The same applies to the Phase 90 phaser these same people add to the unit. As for the vibrato mod you link to, that would work fine on the BE5, but why. I just plug a dummy jack into my 2nd output, and it provides the same result. Should you ever want to restore to original - unplug the dummy jack. Here is one thing I did to mine - as like you, I am not fond of chorus and wanted a VIBE or TREM instead. 1: Plugin a dummy jack as mentioned above, and now it behaves more like a Vibrato or Tremolo - but you may notice the Speed is too low, even when cranked. 2: To increase the speed, you need to alter resistor 104 (R104). Stock it is a 1M resitor, but you need to get it between 500K and 680K. To do this - you can replace the resistor completely, or you can simply add another resitor to the existing one. I did that from the back of the unit (which is clearly marked as well) so if I ever want to go back to stock, a one second solder job removes the added resistor. What I did was add another 1M resistor, and when coupled it becomes 500K (roughly). Now I have enough RATE as it sweeps from nothing (like stock) to at least twice as fast as stock. This behaves more like a vibe than a tremolo as the modulation is pitch not volume, but I find it much more useful than a chorus! This is what I did, but of course you can alter the cap values to get exactly what you want. The larger the cap value, the more high end that you cut. 1: On the EFFECT LEVEL control for the delay, I soldered in a 223 (22nF) cap between the wiper and ground. If you don't proceed with step two then the high end cut provided here will stay consistant with all additional repeats. 2: On the REPEAT control for the delay, I soldered in a 503 (50nF) cap between the wiper and ground. Myself, I would always use the mod as is, so I just soldered the caps to the board. The BE5 is an interesting beast. It's flimsy feel and cheap plastic give way to 1980's Japanese manufacturing under the hood. A lot of mods done today are to update pedals to this era of manufacturing. The BE5 manufacturing began in 1984 but did not hit the markets until late 1988. Although the effects are based on other BOSS pedals, I'm not so certain they are direct copies. Compressor: This is a CS3, but a really early MIJ CS3. It's really more of a CS2 with a tone control. The controls indicate this is an OS2, but the OS2 did not exist until the BE5 was celebrating it's 2nd (2nd year of release) birthday. OS2's are all built in Taiwan, but this is MIJ. Delay: Many think this is DD2 or DD3 however it has longer delay times, more modes and is not connected to the stereo jack. Noise Supressor: Very simplified version of the NS2 with only the threshold control. Chorus: This is a CE3, but rather than have a MODE switch, simply plugging into the 2nd output activates stereo mode. Aside from the chorus (which I never liked anyway) I think the effects in this unit are top notch. I use one for my travel rig when I have to fly to gigs (just 2 lbs) and I am never dissappointed that I don't have my full pedal board with me. Now that I've had the courage to do the delay High Cut mod - I'll be even happier with it. I found it in a search and thought I'd add something. I recently went through my BE-5 that I've had since whenever they first came out. I also replaced all the electrolytics in the signal path with polyester caps and the carbon film resistors with metal films. I increased some caps in the Compressor to let more bass through so I could use it with my basses. Replacing the electrolytic caps and carbon film resistors really cleaned up the Compressor from hissy to practically silent, even at higher sustain settings. And I'm actually a bit shocked at how well the Noise Suppressor works (which is essentially an NS-2 with a resistor-fixed decay rate). It easily trumps my Roctron Hush with my pedals and amps, so I'm using that instead of the Hush for those applications now and moved the Hush to vocal applications. It cancels the noise without significantly affecting the tone or sustain and the threshold knob has a brilliant control range so that you can very gradually find precisely how much noise suppression you want.I'll never do without it. For now, I just left the chorus alone. I'm not really thrilled with it though (nor the CE-3) but I have other choruses that I like so I didn't bother with modding it. It's a little too bold and not lush or spacey enough for my taste in chorus. I might re-visit it someday in the future. I did a little write-up here.
