They are designed long time ago, before CD and DVD players. And as we know, their output signal is about 2V. EQ s-IV and earlier are designed for tape deck, tuner and turntable signals, which is about 0.5V. The higher signal levels overload the EQ and begin distortions. That's why, if you use players without regulated outputs, or if your receiver or preamp inputs are not attenuated, you'll have problems with the quality of the sound.But you know this very well Lately I use mine with The Bose Spatial Receiver. And even with this old vintage, with dry old capacitors and mash of switches and wires inside, I think, they sound well. And my advice is - don't try to use them without the right EQ. It's waste of time.Btw I think the 901's mid-century modern styling still looks cool, especially the black version and especially when the Bose pedestals are used with them (they were used this way in a cellphone commercial about four years ago, located in a swanky, light-colored modern apartment).OTOH, currently an old vintage speaker as the early series of 901 is much harder to beat than in those days, because the tendency of the sonic quality from today's commercial speakers have become significantly worse, even in the upper price class. Please try again I did have a sennheiser MM450 blutooth set but when they packed up after 12 months I decided to look for a new pair. The review I left for the sennheisers was incredibly negative and I still stand by it today (and had i known they would become faulty after only one year it would have been even more negative.) They had no oomph and the noise cancellation didnt cancel much noise. Which is why Im so impressed with the Bose. The noise cancellation on the bose is the real deal. Its mind boggling to think how they do it but yup it works. It doesnt cancel everything but from my experience whats left gets easily drowned out by whatever your listening to The sound is good as well, much better than the sennheisers. Negatives: Working out in the gym with these on is definitely a bit different. Theyre bigger than the sennheisers, but theyre comfier. However their size and the spongy foam dont allow your ears and head to breathe well. But i noticed the same kind of effects using the sennheisers and I got used to it. The noise cancelling is 'OK' if you can get a good seal around the ears, but for me they just don't quite sit right, and I'd get noise leaking in. Not ideal. A friend bought a set of these and I tried them out - SOOO much better. They are smaller than the Sennheisers, so fit my head better (still fit 'around' the ears rather than on them), so I get less noise leakage. And the noise reduction is MUCH better. I'll say that again; even if the sennheisers fit you perfectly so you got no noise leakage, the noise reduction on these would sound massively better. The only thing I have against these is that the headphone cable seems a bit spindly. The Sennheisers had a chunkier cable that will probably last longer, and an inline volume control.
