Where Have All the Families Gone?

Have you ever wondered why families, in general, do not look out for each other anymore? There was a time when people in need did not turn to government for help; they turned to family.

Just as an example, my wife and I purchased a home next to ours so that her mother can be near us when she gets older. That way we can see to her well-being instead of having a stranger do it. That is the way it used to be. We care more for her than any stranger would and as such will be more sensitive to her needs.

Today its seems that families do not help each other much. It is most likely due to the way in which government-run schools are teaching people that government is who we should look to to get help during those times of need.

If you need a place to live, and you have a family, the government will provide you with a place to live in the projects or will tax subsidize your rent. If you need food, the government will provide you with food stamps. If you need clothes, you can get a welfare check. This usually requires that you have children. It is for this reason that some women will make sure they get pregnant when one of their children turns 18 years of age. When there is a system of government handouts, there will always be abuse of that system. That is why they do not work.

It takes effort to overcome the socialist teaching of the government-run public school system. We have to actually teach our children that family looks out for each other. We have to also lead by example. That does not mean that you will always convince your parents, who have been taught in the same government-run schools as you were, to come to you when they get older and might be in need. Many parents do not want to "be a burden" on their children even though we were a burden for 18 years, some of us more than others. You could compromise with them and be involved with their care when they get older and you need to make it clear to them that they are not a burden.

Your children need to know that they can turn to you no matter what the circumstances are. Children sometimes are afraid to turn to their parents when they get into trouble, because they will get into more trouble turning to their parents. They need to know you support them and understand that they will make mistakes, but together you can worked through the mistakes.

The important thing to remember is government is no replacement for family. You family is the only one you have and when any member is gone, it is forever. Cherish them while they are here. When families look to each other for support, then government can't entice us with their "help".
